Road to North Conway, NH
We left Nashua, NH for a two-day road trip to North Conway, NH, which was about a 3-hour drive. Located in the White Mountains, North Conway is in the backdrop of the 700,000 acres of the protected White Mountain Forest which includes Mt. Washington, 6,228 feet, the tallest peak on the East coast. Our route took us along New Hampshire Route 112 (NH 112) which is a 56.39-mile long east–west state highway in northern NH. Winding across the state, NH 112 connects Bath to Conway by way of scenic and mountainous areas of the White Mountain National Forest. Part of this highway is better known as the Kancamagus Highway. Well known for its autumn foliage views, this is a popular drive for “leaf peeping” – which is why we took it.
The Kancamagus Highway is a 26.5-mile long two-lane road that runs east and west through the White Mountains and has been designated a National Scenic Byway by the U.S. Department of Transportation under the name Kancamagus Scenic Byway.
The highway is named after Kancamagus (Kank-ah-maw-gus), third and final Sagamore of the Penacook Confederacy of Native American tribes. Kancamagus ruled what is now southern NH. Wearied of fighting English settlers, in 1691 he moved north into upper New Hampshire and what is now Quebec, Canada.
This drive along the Kancamagus Highway through the White Mountain Forest is devoid of gas stations, restaurants, hotels or businesses – but it does have many scenic overviews.

Beautiful photographs! Such a beautiful road to drive at in autumn!
You do have more fiery colors on Your trees in autumn than we do, here it's mostly yellow and rarely orange.
Have a great continuing on Your trip!
Christer.
Thanks Sandra & Elaine (Country Girl) we have been lucky to see such wonderful and beautiful fall colors. Although we have been told by folks living here that the colors were even more spectacular last year - hard to imagine.
Steve, maybe another visit we will do some long walks, but not so much for camping except at a motel.
Hi Susie, maybe you will drive to NH one day soon.
Thanks Christer, from your photos you do have some beautiful fall colors as well. I owuld love to take early morning walks in the forest you and the boys go through almost daily.
