View from the 5th

We are fortunate not only live on the top floor of a former mill building in Nashua, NH, but also to have windows with views of the Nashua River and downtown.

This photo is SOOCP (straight out of cell phone). It was taken last week and wasn't tweaked in any photo program. What you see here is what was there.

A day later in late afternoon, the sky was less colorful with the threat of rain. But the muted fall colors were no less beautiful. (This is also a SOOCP shot with no after-effects.)

Over the past week we have been treated to some stunning displays of fall foliage in Nashua, NH. The best part is that some of it has been visible without leaving our apartment.

Are you also enjoying fall temperatures and colors?

Weekend Woods Walk

Fall weekends are perfect times to get out and enjoy nature's colorful beauty.

These autumn colors are from Mine Falls State Park, a short walk from our NH apt.

The Nashua River flows alongside much of the walk.

Pretty to look at, but not to touch — poison ivy.

Other plants displayed softer fall-like colors.

We shuffled through leaf-strewn pathways aware how soon this color will be gone.

Until it does we'll continue to enjoy.
Hope you also enjoyed the weekend.

Pretty in Pink

Not referring to our granddaughter (this time) but these blooms in downtown Nashua, NH, this past week.

Flowers are a proud assertion that a ray of beauty outvalues all the utilities of the world. Ralph Waldo Emerson

Flowers are restful to look at. They have neither emotions nor conflicts. Sigmund Freud

Enough said — Enjoy your Sunday and the flowers around you.

Beauty All Around

Welcome to August!

After a recent rainfall, I took a short walk and found these colorful (and very wet) blooms. My camera was a point & shoot Canon digital Elph which was hand held.

Please Note: these collages are not clickable to enlarge; the post was composed using the MarsEdit blog program on a MacBook. This program does not provide the same features as the Microsoft Live Writer blog program does for PC blogging. There is no LW software for Mac users (sadly).

It was a brief shower and later that afternoon, the sun broke through as I continued my walk.

Hosta is a popular perennial named in honor of the Austrian botanist, Nicolaus Thomas Host. Its blooms are purple, my favorite color.

Beauty is also found closer to the ground, quite literally by getting down to be (very) up close.

Iced Beauty

If you read Grenville’s earlier post about our morning walk the other day, you will know that it was challenging to stay upright at times. We managed a short walk. The ice was falling quickly from the trees, but we enjoyed seeing nature’s beauty. Here are some scenes.

End of Day

Here’s my first (but not the last) sunset of 2011 photographed along a Pennsylvania highway on a winter Sunday afternoon. These images were taken with a Samsung digital camera while Grenville was driving on Route 222. We were enroute to our last family visit of the post-holiday season. The last few months of 2010 were a travel whirlwind for Grenville and myself. Thanks for following along on our road trips. We are planning on staying home at The Frog & PenguINN for at least a few weeks. (Yeah, right)

For the Birds

This week has been busy with time spent baking cookies (sampling too), writing Christmas cards, and wrapping gifts. But, it was relaxing to enjoy a cup of coffee early today and watch birds feeding near our kitchen window. Temperatures were in the mid 20s during the early morning so being outdoors was strictly for the birds.

The blue jays never share well and tend to dominate the feeder.

This nuthatch serenaded most of the morning – loud enough to be heard in the kitchen.

Hope you also find time for some peaceful moments during this busy time of year.

Painting by Nature

Nature is painting for us . . . Pictures of infinite beauty.
