Iced Designs

Snow has not been a regular weather event here in Nashua, NH, in recent weeks, unlike other areas of the state, New England, other U.S. states and in neighboring Canada. We've received a scant 5 to 6 inches snowfall from a recent storm. An early morning snowfall this week produced an early morning wintry scene, but later turned to rain.

Despite the snowfall deficit, temperatures have hovered in the single digits for many overnights the past couple of weeks. It has caused ice to form on the Nashua River, but not to freeze it entirely solid for which the gulls and ducks have seemed thankful.

Some warming daytime temps this week started these ice break-ups while creating geometric shapes. These images were taken (as usual) from the comfort (and warmth) of our 5th floor apt. These images are straight out of camera (SOOC) with no post processing applied to them; including the blueish tint (brrrr).

Iced Beauty

If you read Grenville’s earlier post about our morning walk the other day, you will know that it was challenging to stay upright at times. We managed a short walk. The ice was falling quickly from the trees, but we enjoyed seeing nature’s beauty. Here are some scenes.

This Mornings Slide

I can’t call it a walk that we took this morning since there were a few slips and slides along the way. Black ice is a treacherous thing. The schools here started out with a two hour delay and after the first hour changed it to NO SCHOOL. The back roads that don’t get much sun must have been a real challenge as were some neighbors steps.

BUT the ice on the trees was worth it. We should have gotten out sooner but didn’t.


I bet this was even more spectacular earlier when the sun was just coming up. Unfortunately i was not up.

I mentioned a while ago about ‘Rat Trap Creek’. It is small by most accounts but it runs through a wonderful wooded area behind our property. Best part is the owner lets us go and ‘play’ in his woods anytime we want. We in turn pick up what little trash we find.
 
Soon we’ll be celebrating Muskrat Day since we don’t have any Groundhogs on the Shore. More on that next month. There will most likely be more great shots of our creek.
