Then There Was None

Ever try to find eggnog on store shelves before Christmas celebrations are over?

It disappears faster than the decorations, which go on half-price in some stores on Christmas Eve.

Grenville and myself are both eggnog aficionados. It's the one store drink we eagerly anticipate at the holidays. We enjoy ours straight-up (no alcohol).

But, unless you compile a stockpile to last through the week-long holidays, none can be found in stores by Dec 24 (earlier in most cases).

This year, we managed to find several pint-size containers at a local Royal Farms store. Of course, we bought hoarded them and happily enjoyed our bounty beyond New Years.

Sadly, good things don't last forever. This week we finished the last one.

Next year, we'll start earlier, but may make our own batch before then.

Anyone have a recipe to share?

As odd as it may seem, Egg Nog is still on the shelf at the AutoMercado, down here in Costa Rica. Maybe it's not such a hot seller and they keep it until it's all gone? But... I haven't been able to find Silk or any Soy milk for a couple of weeks now.... go figure....

we still have eggnog on the shelves here, and it was full every time i went to the store. i had never heard of egg nog until i moved here to FL and i think the deep south doesn't drink it like the North does.. bob is from PA and he is the one that pointed it out to me.

I have a home-made Egg Nog recipe I really like, but rarely ever make it. It's milder than the store-bought kind.

I really don't care for eggnog. I felt cheated as a child when everyone else was having such a grand treat and I just couldn't learn to like it. I'm sure there are lots of good recipes out there so you can make it year round.

I'm not a fan of egg nog...but I do hoard once in a while! Lately it's involved tea bags. I'm good for a little while =)

Not fans of EggNog but doesn't that just frost your cookies when you are looking forward to something and they don't have it ? Making your own would probably be better . Thanks for sharing . Have a good day !

I am an egg-nog lover as well and take it straight up. Well, I didn't have the foresight to hoard any so I am jealous.

It does seem to disappear from the store very quickly. I haven't bought any for a few years though.

It's Murphy's Law: Whatever you like the most will be in short supply in the stores, or they will quite carrying it altogether. All you can do is stock up whenever you find whatever the item is.

I only really like home made egg nog but never make it because it is so rich. My Mom's old recipe has raw egg in it and many people won't eat raw eggs anymore, even disguised in a drink. We get our eggs pretty farm fresh and I trust those eggs over those bought in the store that have sat there for who knows how long.

I'm indifferent towards it, but my dad likes it. He was perplexed that it was gone after Christmas. I'll have to tell him to buy some extra containers by the 22nd next year.
