WOW… that sounds like something out of King or Tolkien. ‘Return of the King’ or ‘Return on the Gun Slinger’. For a special welcome home dinner i made Turkish Braised Lamb Shanks. Now these poor lamb shanks had been languishing in the back of the freezer just begging to get out and onto a plate. And we had talked about this even before the NJ Trip. So today they became “Turkish Braised Lamb Shanks”. This is a recipe for four (4) but i cut it in half and it worked pretty well.
2 Tbls Paprika | 2 Tbls Ground Cumin |
2 tsp Ground Cardamom | 2 tsp Cinnamon |
1 tsp Allspice | .5 tsp ground cloves |
1 tsp Salt | 1 tsp Black Pepper |
4 Lamb Shanks 1-1.5 Lb | .25 cups olive oil |
2 Lg. Onions chopped | .5 Lb Plums |
.25 Cups Sugar | 1 cup White Wine |
2 cups HOT chicken Stock | Salt & Pepper to Taste |
Mix the Paprika, cumin, cardamom, cinnamon, allspice, salt 7 pepper in a bowl. Rub the spice mix into the lamb shanks creating a spice covering that coats the shanks completely. Set them aside in the refrigerator. Cut the plums in halves or quarters and remove the pit. Heat the oil in a large Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the onions and cook till they begin to brown. Add the plums and the sugar and cook for about five more minutes. Remove the onions and plums with a slotted spoon and set aside. Brown the lamb shanks in the hot oil. Make sure they are well browned on all sides. Add the white wine and cook till it is reduced by half. Next add the chicken stock (did you remember to warm it????) Now return the onions and plums. Set to simmer covered for about 1.5 to 2 hours or until lamb almost falls off the bone. After about an hour you might want to turn the shanks so both sides have time in the broth.
I served this over a bed of wild rice with a side of fresh cut Asparagus and fresh baked Italian bread.
Sorry, No left overs!!!!!! And you thought just the Princess could cook. We will finish tonight off with some HOT FUDGE on top of Chocolate Peanut butter ice cream and part 1 of H.P. and the Deathly Hallows.

THANKS Grenville, my Love, this was a lovely dinner and a great welcome home in addition to all those hugs and "other stuff." Of course, I'm talking about the chocolate peanut butter ice cream and hot fudge sauce . . . LOVE YOU!!!
Oh how I love lamb shanks. Yum. My D used to cook up some marvelous ones ... we liked to buy them fresh when we were in Vancouver. Can't get them up here ... well maybe frozen! Next time I'm down I'll have to look for some ... try my hand at cooking them ... invite someone over!
That looks delicious. We had lamb tonight, too. My Honey made a lamb roast and creamed cabbage. I made the potatoes, dessert (cake and ice cream - the kids were here), and salad. It was a wonderful feast!
Hi Grenville...glad to hear all is well with you two, and B got home safely!
I love lamb and that looks like a real winner of a meal!!
I myself had a few pieces of turkey that was giving to me and a large bowl of ice cream.lol
You are quite the cook. I'm sure B was appreciative.
Lovely meal,i bet that pillow felt softer also.
we have a princess here, but she can't cook like this, she is our pillow princess, baby girl the hound dog. this looks really good enought to eat off the screen and the photos are really good to
I have had almost no meat for the past 3+ months since my almost-vegetarian daughter and son-in-law have been with me. They leave on Wed. so I think it's time for me to go shopping and try out this recipe ... it looks yummy.
Mmmm, looks good! Looks like you were really happy to have your princess home.
Oh that looks yummy. I do love lamb but we don't find it very often in our small supermarket here in the boonies. :)
This looks soo tasty! I don´t have any lamb shanks but I do have two really big lamb chops. I think I´ll save them from the freezer this easter :-)
Have a great day now!
Christer.
I've never tasted lamb, but dinner looks like it was delicious. Fudge sauce on chocolate peanut butter ice cream? Yum! :)
Glad to hear Beatrice has had a safe return home.
Hi Folks,
Sorry about being late responding. Spring work is upon us. This wasn't fresh Lamb either Cicero, although a friend is talking about buying a WHOLE lamb and sharing some. The roast lamb sounds great Lois. Kjell can come down and use our smoker anytime. I hope the turkey and ice cream were in different bowls Grammie. Thank you AC, but she is also a great cook. Watch for tonight's dinner. We gave up on animals Sandra. I was hoping for some chickens and maybe a goat.
NO MEAT FOR THREE MONTHS?????? Ginnie as the great Bard once said "Get thee to a Wendy's and eat thee 3 Baconators". Or something like that. It is wonderful having the Princess home Elaine. We are just barely out of the Boonies TB. Unfortunately we are set to get a new Hospital, the new County Library, and we already have Wal-Mart. I fear we have been 'metropolized'. I don't see why it won't work with lamb chops Christer. Just don't cook them for so long, but the spice mix is great. Daisy, you've never had Lamb???? I guess you didn't grow up 'Poor Irish' On good days when we had money we got 'hot dogs'....
That desert sounds like the absolute height of degradation of any diet! Glad that you recognize royalty. And you are lucky to be working outside, we have a blanket white now after an all day snow. Expect it to melt tomorrow but my gardeing is curtailed.
