Earlier tonight, the sky was beautifully dramatic even without bits of meteor debris swirling about. These views were taken from our back porch.
This event occurs annually in mid-August when Earth travels through a region of the solar system swarming with debris from the tail of Comet Swift-Tuttle. The shower is named after the constellation Perseus, since that is the point in the night sky from which the meteorites appear to originate.
While these bits of debris is about the size of a dime, the intense friction created when they fly through gas surrounding Earth makes them burn bright enough to be visible from the ground.
Did anyone stay awake to catch this event?

Beautiful sky photos! I didn't stay up to see the meteor showers. I had heard about it earlier last week, but then I forgot about it by the time Sunday rolled around!!
I did not stay awake and did not know about the showers, but this explains why at 5:17 this morning i went to latch the sliding glass door to leave for the gym and saw a falling star.. i said to bob i just saw a shooting star... it was big and blazed all the way across our yard...
We did this once but not this year.
I had the date marked on my calendar, but didn't stay up for it. You can still see shooting stars tonight. I think tonight might even be the peak night for the event.
Awesome photos ! Yup Papa was out sky watching to and saw a few ! We here had them at about 10pm . Thanks for sharing ! Have a good day !
Gorgeous skies! Love the golds and soft colors. We didn't stay up for the big event.
Wow! The skies were putting on quite a show for you! I guess I didn't know anything about the meteors - so I guess I snoozed right through it.
You captured some pretty sky pictures.
Love your photos and no, I didn't stay up for the shower. Maybe next year.
Lovely skies!
