Porching It

Nope, not in the sense of sitting on the porch, but finishing it. The front porch needed maintenance every few years in the form of sanding and repainting since it’s not an enclosed porch.

porch project1119 (10)So instead of continually maintaining it, we replaced it with “ wood- alternative” decking made by the Trex Company. The half shown above was done first since it’s the side where we “porch it” in those rockers.

porch project 1119The other half of the porch was on Grenville’s “to do” list last week and the completion is shown here. There’s a color difference between the older and new decking, as the older one has weathered. In time, the new decking will do the same.

porch done 1119Yes, the replacement cost was higher than sanding and repainting the wood. But, the real savings comes in NOT having to redo the porch every few years; composite decking won't rot, splinter, warp or deteriorate – that works for us!

Looking good! Our deck is Trex and it is certainly easier to keep up. Of course, we can't see it right now unless I get out and do a bit of shoveling again, but that will wait until it's a bit warmer.

Ahhh, nothing like having a porch to set on..... I really miss having a porch on this house - but when would I ever get to sit on it anyway?

looks great and sounds even greater. I rather porch it and sit in the rockers.

Yes that is the best solution. It will stay the same color and it will never take on moisture. You have a great looking porch.

I miss my porch!! We have a deck with stunning views here at the rental house but the interstate noise is brutal!

Thanks Everyone for your comments. You are all welcome to come and join us for porch time - spring and fall are the best seasons. We have 3 rockers available all the time.

I've heard it was a great alternative

Now THAT sounds like MY kind of decking. I hate sanding an painting!

Carol, this decking is a great way to avoid having to sand and paint, even if the initial cost is higher. It will pay for itself in later years of no work.
