Friday Funnies

Today's post is a trip down movie trivia.

Can you name the 1988 movie that featured this antique fortune telling machine ?
Bonus Point if you know why the machine was used and what happened. (This isn't an internet grab, as I took this photo of the machine, but can't recall its location.)
Zoltar granted a wish in the film
This fantasy-comedy film, directed by Penny Marshall, met with widespread critical acclaim, especially for the lead actor's performance. It established him as a major box-office success and crowd favorite. The film was a commercial success; it grossed $151 M worldwide against a production budget of $18 M.

As always, no prizes, just braggin' rights. The answer (and winners) posted next week.
Nashua Public Library Friends Book & Media Sale Set-Up
This weekend, the Friends of the Nashua Public Library are holding their Annual Friends Book & Media Sale. The 3-day sale starts with Friday Preview sale night for Friends and invited book sellers and ends Sunday afternoon. Monies raised fund various library programs and events throughout the year. The 2024 sale brought in $35,000. The sale includes thousands of donated books, hundreds of movies,  music CDs, assorted games and puzzles. It takes place in the library's entire lower level. Set-up was done several evenings this week by Friends members, including myself, assisted by local high school students.

Enjoy Your Weekend, Everyone
As Friends members, we're going to Preview night
We vow not to buy more books, but then we can donate them back

I would have really enjoyed being at that sale and it’s highly likely that I would have left with a few treasures.

No guesses on the trivia. We loved library book sales when our kids were young.

...I fail this test.

Our library did a big book sale several weeks ago. Friends go, but I admit to not needing more to read than I already have! Spring is coming and I want to go see what it looks like!

We watched "Big" several months ago. I was happy at how well it held up.

no clue on the movie, that is a wonderful amount to raise with the sale.

That's a great way of raising money for libraries. $35,000 is amazing. We still have a good library network in Belfast, having fought off a few plans for library closures.

I know of a machine like that in a book, but as far as I know, the book has never been made into a movie. Awaiting the answer with curiosity and coveting your book sale.
We have an outdoor one the last Saturday in April and your post has reminded me to donate to it. Thank you!

I use a couple of libraries and there's a seemingly endless sale going. My late husband was not safe around a book sale!

I don't see many movies, so I have no clue. I would look it up online, but that would be cheating, so I will wait for your answer like a good girl. Love to see the library book sale. Our library has been undergoing an interior renovation, and is supposed to reopen next week, so I am anxious to go see what they did, and also to stock up on some books to read. I've been bookless for a while and I need to get back in the groove. Have a lovely weekend. Hope you find some good deals at the book sale!

Gosh, I think it was a Tom Hanks movie? Maybe the one where he kind of became like a child? I know we saw it!

Of course I remember the movie. It was Big. The first time it was shown was when the boy was at the carnival and wanted to ride a ride that a girl he had a crush on. He was unable to ride b because he was too short. He came upon the Zoltar machine and made a wish to be big. The next morning he was indeed 'big'. He spent the rest of the movie waiting to see Zoltar again so he could be back to normal. When he saw Zoltar at the end of the movie his wish is again granted.

Hi Beatrice, Fingers are healed more or less...and I'm back blogging again. I did know the name of the movie without the responses that gave it away... Our Village sponsors and operates a branch library in our county and the bi-annual book sales are a major fund raiser here as well. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

Oh yes! I knew immediately! Big with Tom Hanks, one of my favorite actors. He can play silly to serious and is always earnst and believable. :)

Even though I don't see that many movies anymore, I think the answer is BIG with Tom Hanks. But no bonus points for me...
Oh, that book sale! How wonderful! Are you buying some books or are you "just" setting up? We have a sale like that here as well, once a year and it's taking place at the fairgrounds because it is so huge. It supports the county library with all its 14 locations plus additional services it provides. A very good cause, I think.

The library sale here is a few months away but well attended.

The movie, Big, is a classic! I enjoyed it when it came out years ago. I would also enjoy that sale. My kind of stuff :)

I love these kind of sales. If I lived closer to Nashua I would go. Have fun shopping and helping the library. hugs-Erika
