Friday Funnies

There's been many songs that mention shoes and or walking, for example: Blue Suede Shoes,These Boots Are Made for Walking, No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem, Boogie Shoes, Walking Shoes, Red High Heels, Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes, Dancing Shoes, Walking in Memphis, Waling on Sunshine, Just Walking in the Rain, I'm Walkin'.

Shoes, not songs, are the subject of this post

In the past, I've seen lost or discarded clothing, especially gloves. But, recently on local walks in Nashua, NH, there's been a recurrence of seemingly abandoned footwear. Of course, it's certainly not funny to think of shoeless people, I documented the sightings.

None of the footwear shown below was moved or posed. All photos were in situ in other words as found in the original place (as noted) and not arranged for photo purposes.
In late fall, this leaf pile almost concealed a pair of very worn sneakers and a lone sock.
A couple of weeks ago, this lone right child's boot was found just off a walkway. It featured Woody from Toy Story movie fame, but was missing a companion boot.
These two lone sandals found in different locations on local streets. They almost made a pair as the top photo looked like a right shoe, the bottom was definitely a left one.
This nearly-new white sneaker had no nearby mate and seemed in like-new condition. It was spotted in a grassy area near the local library.
This pair of what's referred to as boat shoes was poised on a good vantage point near a local bank.
Here's another complete pair. These black mens' shoes seemed in very good condition. The pair was alongside a wall in the downtown area.
Shoes haven't been the only things spotted. These socks were in the middle of a downtown street this week which even more curious.

Just wondering — Has anyone else had similar experiences finding articles of clothing or footwear? if so, please share in a comment.

Some of those complete pairs may have been left for the homeless? I feel badly for the child who lost his boot. I bet he's been looking for it ever since. Had it been covered in the snow? Honestly, I can't say that I have seen too many shoes left behind on the ground. Sometimes kids throw them up onto the power lines and there they stay until a big wind blows them back down. I will have to be more aware on my walks to see what I can see. This was interesting!! Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Not on walks, but I’ve seen the odd shoe on streets while driving. It makes you wonder!

I also think the pairs were left for someone in need. The others, ?.

Wasn’t there a song about a red robin walking to New Orleans in the late 50s?

Your shoes remind me that I lost one boot in the deep snow one winter long ago. I retrieved it in the spring, but I soon outgrew them. My mother wore them for years afterward. I mean not for good, but if it was snowy or wet around the property.

Haven't ever noticed them up here. I don't get out much, but never saw that even when I did. A few kids' mittens is about it.

There was a fad a few years back of people tying shoes together and throwing them over a power line or telephone line, or high up in a tree on a prominent branch. There was one tree in particular that got many, many pairs.
I wonder if the majority of the ones you see as a pair were lost from a car or a backpack?
Child's boot. I have a story. My daughter sunk into a snowbank as a 4 year old playing behind the high school. She stuck fast. Two of the boys going to that school pulled her out and brought her home, minus her boots. The boots remained in the snow until we had a melt in the spring enough to bring them to the surface and allow me to retrieve them. I still remember her face when she was handed off to me. She was so pleased with her rescuers. It cost me $ for new boots, however. And a gift for the boys.

I have never seen a pair abandoned but its common to see one shoe here and there on our streets or a parking lot. we think kids are riding in the back seat and toss it out the window, or people open a car door and one shoe falls out. its shocking the things we see in the streets on my walk with Beau, a cereal box, a cute insulated cup, now and then there is food, tossed into the grass.
sock is common, even a pj top once. a blanket, a hoody... that is why I think they get tossed out by kids, or may drunk kids. we saw two really nice hoodies hanging on the fence at the park last week. the park always has things left.

The boot with Woody on it made me sad. I only hope it had been outgrown. And that poor fellow with his feet on the wrong legs....

Good Grief!!! This is almost spooky! What do you attribute this to? Any good reason, or something different for each sighting...

I used to see more discarded shoes than I do now. My favorite was a pair tied together and strung across an electrical wire. I always wondered how they did that.

the homeless leave all kinds of clothing. Clothing get dirty and they find new clothing and throw the old away.

I wonder if these were left for homeless people to pick up or if they lost them. I can't say I've ever found any loose shoes, well except kid ones because sometimes the toddlers kick them off int he stroller and mom doesn't notice. Stay dry in this weather.

Sometimes I see shoes (only one) by the side of the road.
Years ago when my daughter was three years old, I changed her shoes in the car before getting her into preschool and put the shoes on the roof of my car while I was getting her into the school. I forgot about her shoes on the roof and drove away. I had to run some errands, and in the parking lot, a man said to me "there's a shoe on your car". There was - but only one. Oh no! Those were good German Elefanten shoes, excellent shoes for little kids' feet (and not cheap either). So I drove back the route I had been taking before and luckily found the second shoe by the side of the road. It explains how at least this shoe ended up there.

I just keep thinking of all these people running around barefoot! I haven't seen any lately though. Enjoy your West Side Story. One of the greats!

Why would people discard perfectly good shoes? Maybe they decided to go barefoot and then forgot where they'd left their shoes?

One really has to wonder how and why that footwear ended up where it did. Did the owner accidently lose them? We they taken off intentionally and abandoned? Curious minds want to know!

well...i don't get it either!! i see random bits of clothing, i just figure people have dropped. i also see sneakers, laces tied....thrown over a high wire. i think it is a thing!!!

Sounds like a real-life treasure hunt for lost soles! 👟👢 It’s always a mystery how shoes end up abandoned in random places—one might expect a single lost glove, but a whole pair of shoes? That’s next-level! Maybe there’s an untold story behind each one.

Happy Monday, Dorothy!

Unbelievable! Maybe, it's just your area, because no one discards shoes like this in Hawaii. They are donated to Goodwill or other charities.

Hi Beatrice, Abandoned or lost shoes have always grabbed our attention. Back in the old days, many shoe were lost when kids hung their wet shoes out the window or tied them to the rear view window of the family car. Don't understand it these days...but we still frequently spot shoes on the road and along the roads as we travel. The weirdest abandoned shoe experience we've experienced was near the backwoods northern tip of Vancouver Island in BC, named "The Shoe Tree". See https://celebratebig.com/shoe-tree-holberg-road-vancouver-island-port-hardy-british-coumbia/#google_vignette. FYI, we agree with you...we don't care for the 'industrial look' either but it really depends on the quality of the food. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

That is unusual to see so many discarded or lost shoes. I haven't ever seen any on our walks except occasionally tied together and hanging over a high wire ot branches in a tree. We were told it is a sign of where illegal drugs can be bought.
