Friday Funnies

Who stole the walkway?
That's the same question we've had all these years of living at Clocktower Place apartments formerly the Nashua Manufacturing Company. The nest we can figure out is that these brick columns once supported walkways used by mill workers. At one point, the textile company had around 1,000 employees working in a total of 7 buildings. The mill consumed some 10,000 bales of cotton per year producing around 13 million yards of cloth a year.

Enjoy Your Weekend, Everyone
Hope the weather has improved for everyone

It’s odd that the columns were left standing. I wonder if they had other intentions for them?

Wonder why they left them standing?

maybe someday they will put the walkway back? they look dangerous standing there like that..

this is weird they could turn these into something-a cover over to connect them with a sitting area even

It does seem odd they weren't turned into something, like a small covered patio.Or a garden with flowering vines on the pillars.

Maybe it never was a walkway but some kind of conveyor belt to move materials from one building to another.

You mean it's not a new art work by Carl Andre, to follow up his famous piece consisting of 120 bricks?

Beatrice, I'm a little surprised that they are still standing. It was probably less expensive to leave them than to tear them down...or it was part of the historic structure preservation. In any case, we love seeing the intelligent reuse of old structures! It is hard to believe just how big the fabric mill industry in the USA used to be. Our area in East Tennessee has several remnants of the old mill sock plants... Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

I agree. It is odd that they left the pillars standing for no reason. Very strange.

Fascinating photo and trivia. The weather has cooled somewhat (in the low 80s in our part of Virginia and much better to tolerate than being in the 90s).

Maybe they had to remove it because it was crumbling or unsafe? What a strange sight! Wonder why they don't install a new one? So this is where you live?

Amazing!

Strange....must be a story behind it. They ran out of money to build new sidewalks, or they ran out of money when they tore up the walks and couldn't take down the columns? I wonder.

But...where is the door that the sidewalk would be leading to? Very strange, isn't it? Is the building used?

They look sort of sculptural. The heat broke for a couple of days and yesterday was a delight. Tomorrow is "only" in the mid 80s and that feels like a treat, too.

An unfinished story.

It's cool they turned the manufacturing company into apartments. The brick looks like it really held up and still quite spectacular. Thanks so much for sharing, hope you have an amazing rest of the summer!
