Cracking Down on Spam

To me this means checking published blog comments daily to read "legitimate" ones left by fellow bloggers. All of these are read and appreciated.

What's not appreciated and so annoying is to find a lot of spam comments on recent or previous posts. Several recent ones have been left by spammers using names of the Oxford School and Unknown

What can be done?

My suggestion is to — Check published comments regularly. When spot a spam comment is found, click the box to the left of the comment, then select Spam at the top.

Next, look for Spam (it's under Comments) and delete all the comments marked as Spam. This will remove them completely from the affected blog post(s).

Will this stop spammers?
Most likely it will not, and it could even cause an increase in unwanted spam.
But, I will definitely continue to be diligent about deleting all unwelcome spam.

How about you — any spam deletion methods to share with fellow bloggers?

I use Comment Moderation on my blog. I dislike having to do it, but it allows me to check comments before they are published. I also don't allow anonymous comments.

I started using Comment Moderation a few years ago, after I wrote some political posts. I got a barrage of EXTREMELY hateful comments and one death threat!

Every time I allow anonymous comments I get enormous amounts of annoying spam.
Blogging used to be innocent and fun. Lately it has often become an infuriating ordeal....

I just had to deal with this - what a pain! I accidentally deleted my precious REAL comments while dealing with SPAM. I think I have it handled now though. What a pain it is!

I was getting those Middle Eastern escort service spams lol...I put the comment moderation on for a few months, now I have it set to moderate after a few days. So far, besides the Oxford School of Morons, I haven't had to deal with spam. It's so random though! And yes, very annoying.

I moderate comments. Once in a while I receive spam. I guess they don't have anything productive to do!

From time to time I get commercial spam comments. If I post something about tree removal on our property, I get comments from tree removal companies from just about anywhere. Same with other post topics. I easily monitor everything by getting a notice of a comment to approve before it ever gets to my blog. I mark spam as spam which will, hopefully, slow them down.

I usually look at my comments once a week, but lately every day. Then I mark them spam and delete them. So sad that we have to do this, but that's the world we live in now. If it gets really bad, I will just shut down the blog but I don't want it to get to that point.

Comment Moderation is the way the way to go, although they are ready for me to read, as if, it gives me great pleasure in deleting them and keeping my blog free of unwanted visitors.

I check them every day, because once in awhile a spam comment gets past the filters. And I check the awaiting moderation folder as well, as sometimes someone comments on an older post.

Lately I've had the illuminati spammer who looks like he's on a sex offenders list spamming me.

I've had some spam lately. Someone from someplace trying to sell me Halloween costumes. As the world changes, so do the new problems.

I use comment moderation and delete those spam comments before they can appear on my blog.
