New England Weather

Driving through several New England states on our way home last weekend, produced various weather elements – snow, sleet, rain, fog and within a few hours clearing skies. A quote attributed to American humorist Mark Twain describes NE weather:

“If you don’t like the weather in New England, just wait a few minutes.”

clouds1In a speech delivered at the New England Society's 71st First Annual Dinner, New York City, Dec. 22, 1876, Twain expounded on New England weather at length, some excerpts:

“I reverently believe that the Maker who made us all makes everything in New England but the weather. I don't know who makes that, but I think it must be raw apprentices in the weather-clerk's factory who experiment and learn how, in New England, for board and clothes, and then are promoted to make weather for countries that require a good article, and will take their custom elsewhere if they don't get it.

“There is a sumptuous variety about the New England weather that compels the stranger's admiration -- and regret. The weather is always doing something there; always attending strictly to business; always getting up new designs and trying them on the people to see how they will go. But it gets through more business in spring than in any other season. . .”

clouds2“I could speak volumes about the inhuman perversity of the New England weather, but I will give but a single specimen. I like to hear rain on a tin roof. So I covered part of my roof with tin, with an eye to that luxury. Well, sir, do you think it ever rains on that tin? No, sir, skips it every time.”

Love your photo collages! That's what they say about Montana weather: If ya don't like it, wait 5 minutes!

Did you know that the color of a raindrop hitting a tin roof is pink? (Actually it is the sound -- sort of.)

Love the Mark Twain quotes. He was quite the character. We really enjoyed visiting his house in Hartford, CT, when we were there in October. Lovely collages, by the way.

Hello from cloudy Lancaster Co. PA! Thanks for visiting me this morning. I loved reading your posts and looking at your photos. How interesting....I have a sister who lives near Nashua, NH; my Hubby's brother near Lewiston, ME; we live in northern Lancaster Co, PA!

Blessings to you as you downsize. Oh the joys....I think! We have lived in our home for almost 30 years, have raised 6 children here and seemed to have collected much stuff! We are not ready to list our property yet. Maybe in 3 months....and we have a daughter getting married in June too. A very busy and exciting year, don't you agree?

Lovely sky shots. We are having thunder storms in Cincinnati at the moment. It's a great day to stay home and knit, then eat comfort food. :)

Beautiful cloud photographs!

The weather is more one way here. Rain spring, summer and autumn and usually snow in winter. But this winter it has rained mostly :-)

Have a great day!
Christer.

Welcome Doris, thanks for the visit and comments. If we had only known where you lived when we were in Lancaster, PA recently! We are looking to relocate to the Nashua area, but need to sell our home first. where does all this STUFF, maybe elves as Grenville recently posted. It will be a big year for us too with family events, including a wedding and 1st birthday.

Hi Grace, thanks for the mention even if with the squirrel :-) You are right about Maine being far from boring.

Lois & Daisy, we also had an overnight rain, but then very windy all day today. If it was snow we might have had a blizzard but with temps near 60 hardly possible.

Steve, YEAH on snow!

Thanks Sandra, sky shots are always so amazing and can change so fast giving many photo ops.

Christer, same here - no snow.

It does make for some beautiful sky photos though. Don't you wonder what people talk about in places where the weather is always the same?

Beatrice P. Boyd said...

Carole, I think they still talk about the weather...whether it's too hot, to cold and so on.
