That's where we've been touring since we flew from Boston to London on October 17. After a few days there, we flew to Dublin for 2 days and then we've been on a bus tour around various parts of Ireland. Because of the schedule, there hasn't been a lot of any time for blogging as evenings our plan is to get a good night's rest for the next day's activities. Nevertheless, I wanted to post a short update even though it's after 10 pm tonight and past bedtime 😴

From top: Westminster Abbey, London Eye, St. Paul's Cathedral |
Anyone who has ever travelled with a tour group well knows that there is little time to just do nothing as there's a daily itinerary. On our tour, breakfast is early between 7 and 8 am (earlier than when home) and has been served in the hotels. Luggage has to be set out beforehand to be transferred to the tour bus for transfer to the next hotel. After breakfast, it's time to gather together and board the bus or follow the guide for a city tour or other activity. Most days, these events usually go until 4 and 5 pm. |
From top: Tower of London, Tower Bridge, Changing of Guard, Buckingham Palace |
We spent 3 days in London not nearly enough time because there is so much to see in this city. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to visit any of the museums or galleries, hopefully on a future trip. A couple of highlights for our NH group was touring the Tower of London, a very gruesome place in its day and watching the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. Oddly, many of the tunes played were familiar ones from the Great American songbook, including several popularized by Frank Sinatra. There were no bagpipes.
The Great American Songbook is defined as significant 20th-century American jazz standards, popular songs, and show tunes. We heard many that day and it was quite surprising!
We rode on the Underground (Tube) and managed not to get lost even in rush hours. We even lucked out with some sunshine; however, despite ☔️ nearly every day of our London stay.

UK friends, Andrew, Kath and ourselves |
Our personal highlight was meeting UK residents, Kath and Andrew, who we first met over 10 years ago coincidentally when they were touring the US. Chatting at breakfast, we learned that we shared the same August wedding anniversary date. For over a decade, we've kept in contact through emails and cards. And, most recently have connected with phone calls using WhatsApp. |
Fish & chips, jaunty cart, Blarney Castle, Irish coffee |
We're currently on day 6 of a 9-day tour around Ireland. So far, we've been Blarney Castle (didn't kiss the stone), ridden in a jaunty cart, eaten fish and chips (mushy peas too) and Irish stew, enjoyed scones (delicious with butter, jam and clotted cream) and Grenville has hoisted a few pints of the national beverage, Guinness and also bought a tam o' shanter (photos after). |
Touring through the Ring of Kerry on an overcast day |
We've also taken a boat ride on one of Ireland's lakes, toured the Ring of Kerry, watched the crystal making process at Waterford, attended an Irish house part (music and step dancing) and toured a medieval museum. There's events still to come including an overnight stay in a castle hotel and a medieval banquet. Then it's onto a 3-day stay in Edinburgh and a meet-up with a fellow blogger living in Scotland before heading back to NH on November 1.
Unfortunately, there hasn't been enough time to read your recent posts and it will most likely definitely take time to catch up after we return home as there will be the necessary catch-ups for mail sorting, grocery shopping and laundry as well as posting more details on our travels.
Touring can be somewhat very exhausting, but we can rest up once home. For now, we're having a wonderful series of adventures. And, as has been said — wish you were here.

Enjoy the rest of your break, despite the rather damp weather we've had lately . While I was at university I spent three years in London and there was still plenty that I hadn't seen - and that was despite making a plan with a friend that we would visit at least one new place every week.
That is one heck of an excursion. Good for you!
A busy schedule, yet no doubt enjoyable. I have never been on a bus tour of this nature, and it all seems a little too regimented for my liking, but I am sure it’s the only way to manage a large group. It’s sad, or at least it’s seems so to me, that not a moment is allowed for the enjoyment of nature, not a day to wander the great parks of London at will, far from the madding crowds as Thomas Hardy might have said. To view a hedgehog at dusk, to hear a blackbird sing to greet the day, to watch a Robin tend to its young…..
Happy Safe & Wonderful Travels
Y'all sound busy with the touring.Lovely pictures
Sounds like you're having fun!
You've covered a lot of territory in the days you've been there. Glad to read you're enjoying yourselves. If you have time in Edinburgh go see the Museum of Scotland, a fascinating place.
It all sounds and looks marvelous. Yes, you can rest when you get home. I love that you were able to meet your wedding anniversary friends again and also meet up with a blogger.
Glad you're enjoying your tour of Ireland (and London and Edinburgh). You're right, three days in London isn't nearly enough, there's so much to do and see. You've done one better than us seeing Blarney Castle, we've never been there! Glad Grenville enjoys Guinness, I can't stand it! I look forward to your report on the rest of the trip.
so many beautiful places to visit, so little time. everything is lovely and some of it I recognize but only from others showing photos or on TV shows etc.. enjoy the rest of you time, and i say forget about blogging or looking at other blogs. I would not be if i were traveling.
Wonderful places to visit, and your whirlwind tour seems to be hitting some great ones. Take a moment to breathe while riding the bus. Thanks for taking me along!
It sounds wonderful, Dorothy, and I'm the wee-est bit envious but hopefully soon to enjoy it, too. I think you will have to return to London, as you discovered. Ireland is on my list, too -- and it looks gorgeous.
What a wondrous experience! You may sleep for a week when you get home.
I've been waiting to see your posts and today they are here - and what an amazing time you have had! I am really impressed by how much you have done and you must have a wonderful tour guide. That's a really fine picture of the Tower of London (in fact, all your photos are great) and I specially loved your pictures of Ireland, the landscape tugs at my heart. As I said, hope you can return to London another time, and that I'll be able to meet then, but I'm glad you got to meet with your other English friends.
What an amazing trip, tiring...yes...but so wonderful all in all.
Its so neat that you could meet up with long time fellow travelers.
Thanks for the update. Looking forward to hearing all about everything when you return.
Sue
This sounds exactly like the tour group trip another, Australian, blogger took recently. It's not to my taste, but she and you seem to love it and have a marvelous time. Go you! Catch us up when you get back and get your breath back, too.
Enjoy! Enjoy!
Sleep and rest when you can. :)
Enjoy every minute. Great photos!
Fabulous!
I went to Ireland with my sister and our niece last year and I was in London in 2016.
The castle stay and medieval banquet sounds like it's going to be great. Have a fantastic trip!
I so envy you. I have long wished go tour Ireland. To see the Giant's Causeway is a desire. I would also like to see my husband's family's castle. It is still there and has been completely restored. I would also like to see The Poison Garden at Blarney Castle.
Sounds wonderful, even if a bit (lot!) exhausting! It's one of those once in a lifetime events, so I am sure it's worth the wear and tear on your bodies. Looks like you are seeing some wonderful sights and enjoying every minute you can. The upcoming events sound very interesting. Can't wait to hear about them all when you get home and have time. Meanwhile, just enjoy your trip and don't worry about us.
Fantastic photos! Thanks for this great update.
Sounds like you're having a wonderful time.
How awesome that you could meet up with long time fellow travelers.
Hugs and blessings, Dorothy
Hi Beatrice, Sounds like you're having a good time despite being 'scheduled' as part of a tour group. Ireland is lovely and we have many fond memories of our visit there. We've never spent any time in London...probably to our misfortune...but other than landing at Gatwick and driving a rental car through the fringes of London traffic, that's as close as we got to the city. We're giving up quite a bit of adventure but we don't like the regimentation of being on a group tour. Then again, at my age, I can't rent a car in the UK so who knows what compromises we'll make as time goes on... We love Great Britain...York, in particular and then of course, Scotland. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave
Sounds like a wonderful but busy trip. Do you need a holiday to get over it?
You didn't kiss the blarney stone? I did - and it didn't work.
This has been a busy and marvelous tour. Fabulous photos and have enjoyed everything. Understandably there has not been a lot of time for blogging. Plenty of time for that when you have had a chance to rest up after getting home, but do appreciate what you have shared.
Great photos Beatrice.
That was a busy schedule but nice to see so many places. It was good that you met your UK friends, what a lovely way you met, and have kept in touch. It's a shame that you didn't get to visit any of the wonderful museums, an excuse to come back! :-)
