Friday Funnies

Some folks grow flowers, some grow vegetables, others grow both. And, then there are those folks who plant other things . . .

Like a field of colorful plastic flamingoes.
This very colorful group was seen a few months ago on a road trip stop somewhere in Maine.

Did you know that the collective noun to describe a gathering of flamingos is flamboyance. What an appropriate term for such a colorful group. Other collective nouns for a multitude of flamingos are a colony or a stand.

Flamingo and flamboyance come from words referring to fire. Flamingo is from the Spanish and Portuguese flamengo, which literally mean, flame-colored. Flamboyance comes from French, meaning to flame or flair

So, now I know (and so do you)

As a fellow blogger noted this post follows a river of yellow rubber duckies here last weekend. And, as another astutely noted, it can lead to feeling in the pink (sorry for the colorful pun.)

Enjoy Your Weekend, Everyone
Ours include a pipe organ concert and a chili cook-off

The French name for Northern Flicker (a common woodpecker) is quite glorious - Pic flamboyant - Flamboyant Woodpecker. How great is that?

What a wonderful sight! And I had no idea that a collective group is a flamboyance. I hadn’t thought flamingo was connected to a word like flambé either. I enjoy learning about word origins.

Interesting connections there. I think it's flare though.

Your ideas led me to look up the name origin of the painter Vlaminck. Turns out it means Fleming,
Belgian lowlander. And there seem to be some connections with the origin of flamingo, too. I love word origins, thank you.

it is common to see them here both real and plastic, but I am thinking not so common up there. Interesting

I love this! So vibrant. A flamboyance, appropriate.

I'm still thinking about the water race with all those yellow rubber ducks - - and now we are besieged with pink flamingos. How delightfully colorful!

I love all the pink flamingos. What a wonderful idea. The Italian is the lovely word fenicottero, which comes from the ancient Greek.

in Maine? I'm shocked. Most Mainers have very negative things to say about flamboyance. 😏

Thanks for dropping by my blog. I love finding new blog friends too.
I do believe many years ago we both were on ABC Wednesday. It used to be fun to see the world differently but it got to be too much of a "job" for me to keep it up.
Love the pink Flamingos.

What fun! When we lived in Maine we had a friend who loved to put pink flamingoes in our yard at the strangest times. Especially in the snow. Then we all moved to Florida and they moved close to us and we still shared flamingoes back and forth for birthdays, etc., and I also have a lot of flamingo ornaments for my Christmas tree, thanks to this friend. I'd say she is rather "flamboyant"...LOL. Thanks for the info. Of course down here we see them out everywhere in October for Breast Cancer awareness month. Seems to be the mascot for that...

When I was very little (probably about 3 years old) my mom put two flamingoes on our front lawn. It was the thing to do in the mid 1950s. Seeing this post reminded me of that. What a fun post! Hope you had a good time on your trip.

What a lovel, funnyy sight! Still it is plastic, and we are not to encourage production of plastic items, if I understand correctly those worried about climate change.

And,some folk are more bothered doing things, doing more than I do! I should pick up my act!!! Naaah... :)

Someone had time to paint all these flamingoes. What a funny scene to come across. :)

Beatrice, I did not know that a flock or gathering of flamingos was referred to as a flamboyance! Interesting and right on! I decided to see what other names are given to groups of animals. Some are right on point and others seem a bit obtuse. Apes - Shrewdness; Cheetah - Coalition; Cockroach - Intrusion and the list goes on and on. Cockroach certainly fits, don't you think?! Thanks for making me do a little research. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave
