21 Years on the 21st

Anniversaries are special dates, no matter what year is being celebrated.
But, there's only 31 times when this will occur for some couples — It's happened for us๐Ÿฅ‚.

Today, August 21, we celebrate our 21st wedding anniversary๐Ÿ’œ.
A collage of at-home selfies in Nashua, NH since shutdown
Masked up selfies as well
Originally, we were planning to make this year a very special celebration by combining it (belatedly) with our 20th anniversary. In late January, we booked a rail trip on the Rocky Mountaineer across the Canadian Rockies, which included airline travel to and from Canada. Initial deposit was paid in February with final payment due in June. Our travel was set to start on Sept 17.Then, the virus pandemic erupted and final payment was extended to July as the Canadian border was closed (ironically) until August 21. About the same time, the RM train announced that it was ceasing all 2020 travel operations.

While offered rail and airline vouchers to reschedule in spring at no additional (higher) costs, we opted to request a full deposit refund (a 3-part process for airlines, insurance and train). Only hitch was that the RM rail company was issuing vouchers for future travel as were the airlines (the flights had not yet been cancelled). However, late last week Canada once again extended the border closing to Sept 21.

As odd as it sounds that extended border closure was the best anniversary gift we could have received. Our flights were cancelled by the airlines, which means we stand a better chance of a full refund vs. future travel vouchers. We're still pursuing the train deposit and insurance refunds through the AAA travel agency.

Just wondering? anyone else have travel plans cancelled and, if so, any alternatives?

While disappointed at our hoped-for travel plans going south nowhere, we have alternate plans. We will be taking some in-state (NH) day trips and longer road trips. This may extend further into other New England states (VT, ME, MA) depending on restrictions.

Autumn ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚ in New England is a great time of year to celebrate everything.
Celebrate ๐Ÿพ everyday — The best is yet to come !

(The "best is yet to come" is associated with Frank Sinatra, who recorded it on the 1964 album, It Might as Well Be Swing, with Count Basie under the direction of Quincy Jones.)

I had to cancel a trip to Australia in July and I have been unable to get United Airlines to refund my money. And now there is talk they may not survive.

A huge CONGRATULATION to you both!!!

So sorry to hear about your plan being cancelled, but happy to hear you have alternative plans.

" Autumn ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚ in New England is a great time of year to celebrate anything." Yes...I agree!

And yes, I know several other people who had to cancel their travel plans, due to COVID. In fact, one person shared on their blog that the airline company would not give him a refund, only a voucher for future travel plans. And OMG, was he ever mad because he could have used that refund money, being that he was out of work.

"best is yet to come"

LOVE that Sinatra song!

Have a super weekend, my friend! And again...congrats!

Cheers!

Congrats to you both!
As for celebrations, the best ones these days are at home. At least, until a reliable vaccine comes up.

Happy Anniversary! What great photos! I have a timeshare and next year's maintenance fees have to be paid by Oct. 1 this year. I called to see if the association was going to extend the due date and what their plans were for owners using the place. They said "no extension on due date. I can save my time and use it another time when there's no fear of virus or whatever." That doesn'[t make me very happy. I may just have to find a way to give up my two weeks. I've been going there since 1985. I'll miss it. But, waking up tomorrow is more important than keeping the condo.

You and hubby enjoy those extended day trips. It will be such fun. Hugs, Edna B.

Congrats to you both. your collages of portraits are uplifting just seeing your joy in each other. Sorry about trip plans. I'm also in an area where day trips are a lot of fun, but haven't been taking them due to health issues. Soon.

Beatrice, Sorry about you're having to cancel your big anniversary trip... We've cancelled a couple of trips, including a long road trip to Colorado and Utah but since we weren't flying or taking any trains, cancellation simply meant that we weren't going, I wasn't making hotel reservations and the trip plan was put away until 2021. At least you hadn't planned a cruise! Happy Anniversary! Stay Safe and Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

Happy anniversary to you!!! I'm sorry that you cannot take his trip since it sounds pretty awesome, but you don't really have a choice. Staying healthy is more important. Fall in NH sounds like the perfect alternative.
We had to cancel our trip as well. We had planned a graduation trip for our daughter (she graduated from college) to Australia. We had booked all the flights and a few hotels. The flights were cancelled and we're getting a full refund, and we cancelled the hotels and got a refund from each one (so far we only had booked hotels in three locations). The one near Uluru only offered vouchers, but after we had told them our situation they graciously gave us a full refund. You bet that we will stay in their place when we finally can do this trip, albeit without our daughter.

Happy Belated Anniversary to you and your husband! Hope that everything works out for a full refund. While I have not needed any refunds, everyone I know who has, has been refunded with few difficulties. Hope that next spring you will be able to follow your original plans. ๐Ÿš‚

Happy Anniversary.

We were scheduled to go the the Tetons in WY in June. We canceled it in March before the rest of the deposit on the VRBO was due. The airlines issued us a voucher which we have to use in 2021. DOn't know yet how that will work out.

Beatrice, we so enjoyed our travel on the Rocky Mountaineer a few years ago. Stayed at Lake Louise for a few nights before heading home to Florida. We have had great drama with our plans to attend the Quinceanera (15th birthday) celebration of our granddaughter in Illinois, a big deal with Hispanic folks (her Dad is Cuban and she is adopted Argentina). It was to coincide with our 60th Wedding Anniversary in June.We treated all the others of our children and grandchildren to flights and a block of hotel rooms.Ended up with two more cancellations in August and September, with latest plans for next spring. They had plans for 120 guests-- about as big as maybe 5 of our weddings back in 1960. Here's hoping!

Happy anniversary - I'm so sorry about your trip. We also had a trip planned for this past spring - Greece. It's been on my list for such a long time. After lots and lots of back and forth with the various airlines, ferries, tour operators, and hotels, we managed to get most of it refunded. We have some that are still in vouchers which may or may not get used. I'm still hoping to rebook!

Happy Anniversary (few days late, but you should still be celebrating anyway). Nice selfies, you two look so cute together — even masked! I hope all the refunds come through OK and hope for better travel luck in the not too distant future. We took a major trip last year, so hadn’t planned anything big (good timing on our part for once)! We *were* planning to go back to our winter home in Florida, but we won’t be doing that this season. Safer here in Oregon.

Nice photos. It's too bad Covid gets in the way of bigger celebrations, but good you did get to celebrate with a little trip! Hope you're having a nice week. Hugs-Erika

Congratulations on your anniversary and sorry that you didn’t make your Canadian trip. Good that you will get a full refund now. Yes we’ve had similar problems although we have accepted vouchers and now have a holiday to Wales booked next month. Fingers crossed it will happen. Love all your selfies :) B x
