Today, the U.S. celebrates its 241st birthday -- Independence Day 2017
The above flag was displayed on the U.S. Coast Guard training ship, Eagle, which we saw recently in Boston Harbor when it participated in Sail Boston 2017.
USCGC Eagle (WIX-327) is a 295-foot barque used as a training cutter for future officers of the United States Coast Guard. She is the only active commissioned sailing vessel in American military service, and one of only two commissioned sailing vessels, along with USS Constitution. Eagle is the 7th Coast Guard cutter to bear the name in a line dating back to 1792, including the Revenue Cutter Eagle, which famously fought the British man-of-war Dispatch during the War of 1812.
Ironically, Eagle was built as the German sail training ship Horst Wessel in 1936 and served to train German sailors in sail techniques until it was decommissioned at the start of World War II. In 1942, the ship was given anti-aircraft armament and re-commissioned. At the end of the war, Horst Wessel was taken by the U.S. as war reparations.

Great little bit of history and what a lovely vessel! Thanks for telling us about it. My son served on and off the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln for six years and my dad was a navy guy as well.
Yay! We are off today due to the holiday and having hot dogs, ribs, macaroni salad, dressed eggs, parfaits, and "sandbar sangria". Love July 4, but sad that it marks 1/2 of summer being over for the school systems. (I like the low traffic levels, lol). Have a wonderful day!

We stayed at a motel near Fall River a few years ago. Across the water from us is a museum of American ships. I had a good time going through all of them especially the battleship since my father served on one when he was in the Navy. Good post.

Hope your 4th was all you hoped it would be. You are probably watching fireworks as I write this :). Dale and I opted to stay home tonight but Ellen went with others of our family to see some. Sitting under the display on Sunday is all I need till next year!
