Oh, my. It reminds me of the story My Honey told me about a friend who built himself a new fireplace on the first floor of his home without reinforcing the floor. His fireplace ended up in the basement - fortunately with no fire in it yet.
It looks like they intentionally built it that way. In my father in laws house the chimney was square with the world from basement to first floor. The upstairs they decided to give it a half twist. By the time they got to the top, they had twisted it back square again.
Always interesting to see what lies behind the walls in all those old houses. Most would be a building inspectors field day. Amazing they held up as well as they did!
