Cute, but sadly there's always someone who will try it. Bears may look cuddly, but they can be deadly. Back a few years ago a tourist did climb over two fences to get photos of Binky the polar bear in the Anchorage Zoo. She ended up with a broken leg and bite wounds but Binky kept her tennis shoe for three days before it could be retrieved. A few weeks later some teenagers got drunk and thought they would swim in his pool and one ended up in the hospital after he got mauled. They were both extremely lucky to get off that lightly. Binky became quite famous and a reporter got a photo of him with the tennis shoe in his mouth. Do a Google search for Binky and Alaska to see the photo.

Thanks Everyone for the comments on this post. This NH tourist venue was closed for the season when we stopped there in late Oct. but, three bears still provided quite a show. Elaine, I looked up the story of Binky online and it seems he was just protecting his turf. Sad to read of his untimely death from an infection.
