A Memorial Parade

Who doesn't love a parade?

We both do and for as long as we've been living in Nashua, NH, almost 10 years, we've always attended the Memorial Day parade here. Patrick is a U.S. Navy veteran.
The parade was held downtown along Main Street and started at 10:30 am from the Holman Stadium ballpark. It was canceled for a few years because of we-all-know-what.

Nashua police and fire department honor guards always start are the first units to march.

The city holds two parades to honor those who served. A Veterans Day parade in November  commemorates the signing of the WW I armistice at 11 am on November 11, 1918.
Lots of folks turned out on a perfect parade day with blue skies and sun after rain and cloudy skies had dominated most of the holiday weekend. A police estimate placed the Main Street turnout at roughly 2 thousand out of a current population of over 91,000.  Crowds were larger years ago, according to a 1958 newspaper article, the parade that year attracted some 13,000 people, a third of Nashua's then estimated 40,000 population
There are three high schools and three middle schools in Nashua, NH; two of the high schools and all three middle schools were represented by students in marching band units.
The American Legion and Boy Scouts were represented by these young marchers.
Sidewalk crowds were enthusiastic to the point of using a notebook PC to video the parade.
A number of younger parade watchers along the route were dressed in colorful t-shirts.
Traditionally, fire engines and ambulances have signaled the end of the parade.
However, this year, it ended with these newest members of the Nashua Police Department (NPD) which recently established a mounted unit, featuring Mac, a Belgian draft horse, and Maddie, a Gypsy Vanner cross. This is a self-funded, non-profit unit, which means there is no financial burden to the community. The goal is to enhance public safety and community outreach. (FYI the horses had pouches behind them and did not leave any on street deposits.)
This canine was in a car that passed after it the parade ended and too late to view it.

We hope that bloggers in the U.S. had a good holiday weekend, however it was observed. Ours was spent at home in Nashua; we watched the parade and visited with friends.

Good morning Thanks for sharing photos of the parade. When I was a kid growing up we watched the parades-My father's parents had an apartment on the parade route-so that was always fun.
Since then I have not lived near a parade Sweet dog looking out the window

Excellent idea to put the horses at the end. I wouldn't want to march after them!

I really enjoyed your parade, a very good sampling of what was entered...and that's a lot of parade participants!

I find it absolutely impossible that you have been in Nashua for 10 years. It's just 2, right?

Thanks for sharing the small town atmosphere of what America stands for..I loved it all and remember my High School years of marching and playing in every parade that came down the pike.
Those photos of the little kiddos watching the parade are real wall hangers.
Ours was a quiet day of remembrance and just enjoying being home together. Oh yes, we did have the true "American" meal of hot dogs for dinner..mostly because I was too tired to cook! HaHa
Thanks for sharing your day.

How wonderful to see the city parade, with all of the marching bands and scouts, and even the horses at the end, just after the firetrucks. That was a wonderful parade, and it was so nice to see so many young families and children there to watch! I haven't been to a parade in a long time. Our little town usually has a Christmas parade, so we will watch for that...and they do fireworks on the 4th of July, with a lot of activities in the park. However, it's usually too hot for us to be out in the park on the 4th of July, but we usually do go find a spot to watch the fireworks after dark. I love that your town does this. That's what small town America used to be all about!!

We always took our kids to the Memorial Day parade in my husband's hometown when they were young. Then we started going to our own when our kids were in the parade for Girl Scouts or Marching Band. We've taken the grands a few times, but haven't gone the last few years because of the weather. Thanks for sharing your pictures.

I love a parade. Even on such a solemn occasion everyone feels good when the parade ends.

That looks like a great parade. I haven't been to one for several years, but these are the best type- meaning it's all local. hugs-Erika

We thought about going to a parade, but cool weather and a forecast of rain kept us away.

So nice to have the facility back to have these celebrations. We had a parade in our capital city of Ottawa today. The king opened Parliament, with all the formal bits, a Mountie escort, a 21 gun salute and lots and lots of waving people. He also laid a wreath at the cenotaph, and that pleased me. It is so important to honour our service men and women.

Lovely parade and looks like a nice turn out as well. Our area doesn't have a parade. But, as a kid living at home there was one near the house that ended up in the cemetery that we used to go. I wonder if they still do that. You've got me curious. I'll have to check. Very nice tribute post.

I really enjoyed every single sight ♥️
How amazing that school and scouts were allowed to participate as well 👍
This is sad that parade was cancelled for some years for some reason but I think such events are crucial to educate and entertain people.
You captured the whole event awesomely my friend 👌🥰
I also loved the little watchers who seemed to have fun as well 😊
The woman with two children in her lap looked like woman we see around here 🤗
