Anyone want to venture a guess on how many pies this pumpkin would make for Thanksgiving Day dessert?
A 3 lb. pumpkin would yield enough puree for a recipe calling for a can of pumpkin (usually 15 ounces) which means this one could potentially make over 675 pies, more or less. Of course, imagine how much effort would be involved. Our pumpkin pie will be made using a can of Libby pumpkin puree.
This 1st Place winner at the Deerfield Fair in early October weighed in at 2,034 lbs. Coincidentally, it was grown in a NH town with the same name as my NJ hometown.

I wonder if a huge pumpkin like that has much flavour; I know that some of the giant vegetables grown for show purposes in the UK are pretty tasteless and rather stringy. Very few people in the UK know what to do with a pumpkin, other than hollowing it out and carving a face on it.
I doubt whether there would be a whole lot of flavour from a giant gourd like that, and it would probably be stringy too. You are probably better off opening your can!
wow, I am sure the cannery would love to have that big guy, just think how many cans it would make for them to sell to us..

What a monster of a pumpkin. We will be baking pumpkin pie at daughter's in Buffalo on Wednesday. Not sure if we are using canned puree or roasting pie pumpkin for the puree.

That is a huge pumpkin! I used to make pies from fresh pumpkin and it is a lot of work. I find the canned pumpkin works just as well and is so much easier to do. That's the route I'm going this year.
Ye gods, that's big! 675 pies - that's mind-boggling. I've only had a pumpkin pie once, and it was delicious. People here seem to throw away their pumpkins after Halloween rather than eating them. Such a waste.

I'm always amused by huge fruit or veggie. I never eat pumpkin, only admire its color, shape, and carved items.
I guess that's "the Great Pumpkin", Charlie Brown! Wow!! I prefer Libby's pumpkin too! Much simpler and comes out perfect every time! How did they ever get that monster to the fair? Must have taken a crane to lift it! LOL. Wow, that is just plain amazing!! Thanks for sharing it with us.
That is a huge pumpkin. Enthusiastic gardeners compete with one another to grow the biggest produce but I think in this case the pumpkin would be tough. I expect you will be preparing for Thanksgiving. Enjoy your special time.

Our town sends a big pumpkin down to one of our sister cities, Franklin in TN. We have another in Scotland.

That is one giant pumpkin. I wonder if they get "stringy" when they get that big. We are home safe and sound. and the 90 degrees isn't humid like here, so although warm, it is much more comfortable than 90 in NH. And that was only for a few days of our trip.
