Hearts Day

Today is Valentine's Day, a day set aside for expressing Love for the special someone(s) in your life — spouse, lover, family, friends. It's a sentiment that we try to celebrate daily.

Here are some things that work for us — all are inexpensive, and while not appropriate for everyone, they can be for your Special Someone. This modified list is a repeat of a past Hearts Day post, our preferred V-Day term, and gives a few very easy ways to tell someone that you care.
  • Do nice things for no "special" reason
  • Start and end each day 3 words: I Love You (works with any family member)
  • Never go to bed angry; I'm sorry goes a long way when you're upset with anyone
  • Light candles whenever possible (we do most evenings; always at dinner)
  • Sit and talk (works for anyone).
While we don't exchange gifts, there's always a LOT of cards to open. These are some from earlier this morning. Yes,there are more cards openings to come as the envelopes always have handwritten instructions on opening times: early morning, afternoon, evening. Spoiler Alert: we opened these while sipping coffee in bed, which is a morning "tradition."

We're not alone with this tradition. This day is the second most popular card sending holiday (Christmas is first) and more than 150 million Valentine's Day cards are exchanged annually. It's not only celebrated in the U.S. but also in Australia, Canada, France, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. A history of Valentine's Day origins and traditions can be found on the History channel website.

Happy Hearts Day — Please share what you are doing. We would love to know.

(Also, thanks for comments on the S(n)o (w) Tired post. We are bracing for another major storm blizzard this weekend, but are safely indoors and so are our cars.)

our special treat was the two eclairs i brought home from Walmart. we had them for breakfast. we don't do the day or cards or gifts, but we do almost all of your suggestions.. we are going out for lunch, but then we would do that most Saturday anyway.. bob drew a valentine heart on the bed spread with his finger, if that counts.

I was surprised to find out in a photoblog yesterday that while it's celebrated in Spain, Catalonia does not mark the holiday.

I agree with those three special words, "I Love You," they should be said everyday.........

We had a nice dinner out last night. I'm glad we went then because the weather would have prevented it tonight. Happy Valentine's Day to you!

We are in tune with your list, though this year we did not buy each other cards. We did have a lovely day, nothing too special but we always enjoy being together. I'd like to add one more thing to your list, laughter. Being able to make the other laugh is the best gift and I'd rather have that than a dozen roses.

I think of you two up there in all that snow. Glad you are safely tucked inside and don't have to go anywhere for a while. No snow here again but we can hear the wind picking up.

Well, I had to come back and tell you. I just looked outside and there is a dusting of snow on the ground. I can't tell if it is still snowing but it is exceedingly windy.

We had a rather traditional celebration with wine for me, beer for Jerry, cards and thinking over the year, a red rose made from feathers he bought at Flying J with 2 cinnabons to start the AM. We are altering plans and will remain here St. Augustine at least a week. Had intended to head north via Charleston SC but the wintry spurt through the midsection will not quit. So we wait. In the sand and sun, windy here but not shoveling nor shivering. Cheers from the coast.

PS don't forget about the beheading of St. Valentine for whom the day is to celebrate. We are off to the trolley city tour now..

What a lovely Valentine's Day tradition and wonderful tips! We shared a Valentine's breakfast with our young boys at the cafe across the street :) I hope you stay warm and safe during the snowfall and afterwards... seems everyone is counting down the minutes until Spring ;)
