Fall Cleanup

It was finally looking like fall had arrived at The Frog & PenguINN this past weekend. The leaves were turning colors and piling up in the yard, even though the crepe myrtles are stubbornly retaining most of their leaves. Those trees won’t be bare for another week or more.

The wildflowers in Grenville’s backyard meadow were all just about bloomed out. While there were a few stragglers, they all met Grenville and his “friend,” John Deere. First, they cut down all the stalks and then pine straw was added.meadow mowed1118 (1)meadow mulched (2)
Pine straw is our preferred mulching material. There’s plenty in our own backyard thanks to the pine trees; also there’s more on a couple of back streets near our home. There’s lots of reasons why we prefer pine straw (called shatters by some) — it decomposes well, lets air and water through, looks more natural than store bought pine nuggets, and best of all it’s FREE as long as you’re willing to work at gathering it.DSCN4781
This supply, which is actually the second and third piles we’ve collected, will be completely used up by the time we’ve finishing mulching all the flowerbeds.pine straw piled (2)mulched flowerbeds
By the end of this week, we’re hoping that all the leaves are off the crepe myrtle trees so we can complete our fall yard work.yard workers
How did you spend your weekend?

You folks have been working hard! My weekend was fairly uneventful. I ran a lot of errands and went out to dinner with my husband. :) I hope you have a good week ahead.

Oh WOW ! you are still in the fall mode there ? We have had warm temps that last few days but getting cold again and the winds have been horrendous the past week or so and there are no more leaves left on our trees it is soo bare now ! I didn't know about the pine straw being used as mulch , I guess it is like the forest bed being covered in them and that all grows so well under it all ! Lovely photos . Thanks for sharing , have a good day !

Love the poses in the last two photos. We will be doing some clean up once all the leaves have dropped.

Thanks for the chuckle...that last shot is too much, hehe!!
We did not get the leaves cleaned up this week end. And, there are soooo many!
Your house looks so inviting, always, but especially so with the beautiful leaves scattered about.
Wishing you a wonderful day!

I cannot decide whether you are trying to look fierce or whether you are trying not to laugh. These are gorgeous pictures. Fall is my favorite time of year with all the colors and smells. A note to Out On The Prairie; I had no idea that the house from American Gothic was still standing. My bucket list just grew.
