Smokes Anyone ?

Usually when we're on a road trip, gas price signs are a favorite photo subject for me. However, this weekend when stopped at a gas station in PA on a family road trip visit, this one caught my attention.

When I was a growing up, my father was a smoker and the cost per pack cost in the 1950-60s was under 50¢. As a non-smoker, these current tobacco carton prices are staggering to me.

By comparison, the price of a gallon of gas has been dropping in some places and is currently under $3.50/gal near us.

Quite a trade-off.

Never smoked in my life, but I know that the cost of doing it has gone up considerably. The last time we filled up with gasoline, it was $3.891/Gal.

Our gas has been bouncing between 3.29 and 3.69/gal. Currently it is 3.49 and the obligatory 9/10s/gal. Don't know the price of cigarettes but I expect they have also risen dramatically. I miss taking those trips. Cheers.

i wonder how many packs in a carton, at 6 per pack, YIKES... I just stopped and googled it, 10 per pack 20 cigs per pack. so 60.00 for a carton and comes to over 3 per cig.. ouch to the pocket book and the lungs.

I have no idea what they can cost over here, a non smoker as I am. Must check that so I can compare :-)

The petrol prices haven't moved in months here, can't understand why since the US dollar is so cheap over here.

Have a great day!

Being a smoker, I can certainly attest to the higher tobacco prices.

I used to roll my own, but the government made loose tobacco prices higher than the ready made. Go figure!

I smoked when I was 19 and smoked for 10 years. The price was 55 cents per pack. Thank the lord I quit for many reason in 1983. When I see people not able to afford food but will purchase those cigs, it boggles my mind. They could purchase food if they would stop smoking. Not to mention health issues...

Yes, its hard to stop, It took me 4 days and was the hardest thing I ever did but I feel so much better and I smell better too.

Hope you all are having a safe trip!

Wow! Now that's an expensive habit. I'm so glad I'm addicted to yarn instead. ;)

It's a quandary: The state raises cigarette taxes "to discourage smoking" but also increases their dependence on that revenue so they need people to buy cigarettes. I never smoked. Looked too much like burning money.

Those cigarette prices are crazy. I've never smoked. This looks like one more good reason I'm glad I never started.

And people still do it.

I just do not get how they keep on puffing....many complain they cannot afford so many things and yet today with so many programs and ways to quit they keep burning their $$.
