Today is a special day in the minds and hearts of many in the U.S. and those in other countries who lost loved ones in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in NYC, PA and Washington, DC.
As NJ natives, we vividly recall the terrorist attacks that toppled the Twin Towers claiming over 2,700 lives. Pat (Grenville) is a former NJ firefighter and mourns over 350 brother firefighters who also died.
Sept. 11, 2001 was the first day of my “retirement” after being down-sized (laid-off). I received a call from a friend who told me to turn on the TV’ It was on non-stop for over 48 hours.
Bad things do happen in the world, like war, natural disasters, disease. But out of those situations always arise stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
Daryn Kagan, CNN broadcast journalist
Do you recall what you were doing that day ?

i was on the first day of my vacation and that happened to be my first day as manager in a new position. i had to go into work and change my vacation... most of all i remember standing in the 7/11 to pay for my gas, and looking up to see why everyone was watching TV
Sticks with me today. I was in a first grade classroom teaching reading. We took turns leaving and watching the TV, wondering how one could explain this and the tears with all the teachers.
I was arriving at school and turned on the tv in my classroom. The radio in the xcarwas giving out confusing statements, they not really knowing what was going on. I left my set on all day as I felt my students needed to know what was happening. Staff in my building were still in the blind by noon not knowing that this was not just another trival news story. A very sad day that I will never forget.
My son was home sick from school that day, and I was home with him when I first heard about it. I'll never forget the horror of that day.
I was at work and found a group of fellow employees gathered around the TV in the lobby as I left a morning meeting. We stood in disbelief as the second plane flew into the tower....Just horrible. I later put my arm around a person (I think she was there working with the OT, PT group we used) as she sobbed and told me her boyfriend worked in the Towers but called in sick that morning. Incredible! I will never forget.........
I posted on my Facebook, a day burned into my memory...leaving for my commute to Sacto, in awe on the bus ride, in shock. Then we sent most folks home and several of us mgmt. types stayed to tenuously hold down the fort. Eerie there 16 floors up..
I remember I was at home and Gregg called me to tell me to turn the TV on. My blood still runs cold thinking about those horrific images, but there were so many heroes. I know I have told this story before on my blog, but the vicar who married us in my small village back in England, lost his daughter that day. She was over here at a conference in the Twin Towers. I found out months later.
I don't think any of us will forget exactly what we were doing. I was at work and someone came in and told us to turn on the TV. We did just in time to see the second tower hit.
Impossible to forget such a horrible day.
I was working a job at a law office when the attorney came in and told us to find a TV. We were watching when the second plane hit, and when the towers fell. Since my husband is a firefighter, I knew that many of those brave men and women were lost. Not long after the office closed and we all went home.
