A question today, more of a rant — not against fellow bloggers — but spammers.
A fellow blogger recently commented on this issue posting that she had been bombarded with over 80 spam comments in a single week.
It's been happening here too. Recently, on the pull down menu above published comments, there were some 50 that blogger had flagged as potential spam — Most of these were actual spam, others that were not flagged were more of the same.
Nearly all spammers spew their garbage overnight, many contain links to online betting. Daily morning checks show postings within the past 4-6 hours of a 7 am check.
Unfortunately, actual blogger comments are sometimes marked as spam. These need to be checked as OK to publish. It's become a morning routine to check comments, delete spam, OK legitimate comments to publish.
Seriously, do these spammers think anyone in his/her right mind would click on any of the included links?
- WHY do spammers bother; paid commissions on the number of spammed sites?
- WHY if blogger can ID a comment as spam is it still published?
- WHY when marked as spam and deleted, a spam comment returns on another post?
What I've been doing
As mentioned above, many recent spammers hawking online betting come from a specific source(s). These sites have been reported to blogger for inappropriate comments. When a spammer is reported, blogger will send this reply:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
Thanks for flagging potential policy or legal violations on Google.
We’ve received your report under the following abuse category: spam or unwanted content.
The Google Team
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whether or not this will limit or prohibit future spam is yet to be determined.
Here's are several sites recently spewing spam comments. If you find any in your post comments, the best advice would be to delete immediately.
- Laser247
- ReddyAnna Book
- Online CricketID
- Arman
- Bet bbhi
- Online Cricket ID
In addition to spam containing links to online betting, spammers will use flattery and offer positive comments on how well the post was presented, etc. It's all smoke and mirrors (something that seems good but is not real or effective). It's best to delete these too.
Many bloggers moderate comments in an attempt to control spam, possibly for other reasons. If you do this, does it work?
Your turn — If any blogger has other solutions that work, please leave a comment.

...I had Laser247 hit me lately. It takes seconds to delete them!
I have WordPress, which employs Akismet to filter out spam. So no problem for me, as spam doesn't surface on my blog.
I’m afraid that I have resigned myself to it. Comments go to my email for approval before being published so I delete them.
I have not been hit, but I’m sure now that I say that, I’ll be onboarded!
I have had maybe 5 per day, the kind that leaves personal remarks with a link, I delete them. today I got up to the gambling spam, there were 21 of them published and 25 of comments from friends were in spam but had published. I just to to comments and click manage, tap on the 21 and click spam and delete. it is aggravating for sure, but to me having to read every comment and publish is more aggravating. about 3 months ago I got up one morning to over 100 on all 3 of my blogs. now that was aggravating.
Delete, delete, delete is my go to…spam is a nuisance!
I use comment moderation and now I've banned anonymous comments too. So at least my readers are spared them.
And this is why I moderate. I haven't had many -- maybe one or two a day. But more will come. I just don't get it.
I have a few spammers, today there was one about gambling. But what irks me is the spam folder seems to have legitimate comments that were made long ago (maybe a week) by regular people, which have no message that's at all questionable. I of course approve them, but those comments are really being held for what reason?
I seldom get spam comments on my blog (I think BT has a pretty good firewall), but we get plenty of scammers on our phones, claiming to be from bank security or Amazon or some other unconvincing source. It's scary how much money people can lose if they don't realise it's a scam - often thousands of pounds.
It is easy to delete them when you have chosen the moderation of comments. But I notice Blogger only allows me to also mark very few as spam and then after that I have to just delete. I got a bunch of them for a couple of days but haven't since. I didn't know Blogger will remove spam and don't know where to look to see they haven't removed comments that aren't spam. I'll have to search and see if I can find them.
I don't think I have spam now or get much at all, but I am going to check the folder now bc sometimes the comments go in there -- even mine on my own blog. :)
I have always moderated my comments. I still got spam comments, but they never reached my comment section. I will have to keep an eye on my new blog to ensure spam doesn’t get through. Yes, I have a new blog … daystorememberblog.wordpress.com.
Unfortunately I feel that any action including unsubscribing or reporting these sites only increases their efforts. The best you can hope for is that they will be sent automatically to your spam folder until they stop because of lack of response. Otherwise just delete delete delete.
I have a few spammers but not many thankfully, so I hope I haven't jinxed myself. I'm afraid there is a whole world out there and it is hard to stop the tide.
On a happy note, I wanted to wish you and Patrick A Very Happy Thanksgiving, and also to say how very happy I am that we have enjoyed your friendships over the years, and it's been fun popping into your blog to see what treats you have in store for us. Happy Travels also, as I know you are visiting family.
Fortunately I haven't been bothered by spam on my blog..now I'm afraid I will...
We get so much spam on our phone and emails which I have to kill daily. This morning at 5AM we got a call from "Unknown" call block immediately..This was NOT my wake up call, thank you! I was not a happy person.
Sue
I get lots of it, which I block. But there are always new ones. I have heard that they continue to do this because enough people fall for it to be worth it.
I get very little spam, but what I do get pretends to be a real blogger and that is beyond annoying. With you for sure.
thanks for the heads up. I haven't been checking spam lately.
Yes, spammers are doing the rounds at the moment.
Comment moderation can help, but I just delete them.
All the best Jan
wow that is a lot of spam comments. I have not gotten that many so far thank goodness It is why I approve comments though-so the spammers don't get published. It seems once I go back to letting comments post then I get hit with lots of spam-so I have my comments set for my approval first-easier for me that way
I have not had blogger mark any comments as spam though-glad they don't
When I was blogging regularly I would get a few a week, but I do moderate.
I've had the same issue, and many of the same commenters.
I've had a few, but nothing like you mentioned. Have a great holiday, and I hope you don't get too much rain in NJ.
i am thankful to have you here as friend dear Dorothy
will come back to read this post
Happy Thanksgiving to you and loved one!
dear Dorothy it's been more than an year i am receiving spam comments .they were so many before i chose to moderate my comments but they reduced since i did so .
worst part is that comments from blogger friends go to the spam box as well sadly
first i had no idea but after reading from friends like you i checked my spam box and found friends comments in spam box for mor thane six months ,after that check my spam box regularly thankfully and publish real comments ,my own laptop has been out of order since sometime so i now use my son's .he studies for entry test for the university admission and i had to wait till laptop is free .it's unpleasant for me
best wishes and hugs
i only get a little bit of spam and do not use comment moderation. it is the only way i know of to stop it!!
I started moderating the comments on my blog several years ago after all sorts of junk was being posted on my blog.
I sort through the comments now to make sure they're legit. And point well taken about the flattery. It's usually very general, nonspecific comments aimed at boosting a blogger's ego. Be gone!
