(Still) In the Mood

It's a new year, but we're still in the mood, the Christmas mood. Unlike many others, who may have taken advantage of the past holiday weekend to take down outside and inside decorations, our tree remains up. We're still enjoying the multi-colored lights nightly. How about you — any holiday decos still up?

Most likely, once everything is put away (probably this weekend) we won't have to wait until the end of 2021 to see holiday decos again. That's because they start appearing earlier and earlier in retail and Christmas in July seems more of a reality than just fanciful thinking.

The New Year was ushered in as low-key as Christmas for us. We happily spent the day at home, didn't most folks? Our day started with a long-standing tradition of cinnamon buns which, as you can tell, were thoroughly enjoyed. A can is always kept in the back of the fridge for "special" occasions and this day certainly was one of those. Grenville's smile shows his enjoyment.
We also kept with another long-standing tradition of going for a New Year's Day hike, which (almost, but not quite) justified our breakfast treat. In past years, we drove to Silver Lake State Park in Hollis, NH, for a First Day hike. This year, we walked closer to home going to Mine Falls Park in Nashua, which is within walking distance of the mill apts and a favorite walk spot.
Trees decorated by previous walkers greeted us along the way. We wondered if they had been the work of one group since all had a bright red ribbons, garland, and colorful balls. These were a cheerful sight and, hopefully, will remain decorated for a while longer.
An alien watched from a tree as we walked by. Most likely it had been lost by a child and put there for its owner to hopefully reclaim. Surprisingly, there was a lack of wildlife, human or otherwise, along most of our hike.
Once home, the rest of the day was spent in comfy clothes and later, we dined on a meal of shrimp scampi and home made baguettes (first time attempt) and wine. No need to worry about being out on the roadways.
During the week between the two holidays, we received some post-Christmas family photos. Both great nieces, Autumn Rose (L) with friends and Savannah Marie (R) with parents celebrated at home in NJ and FL, respectively.
Plaid was in as seen in a Christmas pose of youngest granddaughter Lilliana seen with her mom, Coleen, and as Santa's helper in decorating their PA tree. Matching plaids were worn by cousins David, Dennis and their son, William, in NY. This threesome were the only family members who wore identical PJs. Did any members of your family do the same?
While inside our apt is still in the holiday mood, the exterior received a makeover earlier this week. A group of snowmen have settled in for a long winter's visit. We hope there will be some snow this season so they won't melt of boredom.
Their penguin and frog friends also have a couple of snow companions.
In the Mood is the name of a popular big band-era jazz standard recorded by American bandleader Glenn Miller in 1939 and featured in the movie Sun Valley SerenadeThe composing credit goes to Joe Garland and the first recording was released by Edgar Hayes & His Orchestra in 1938.

Best Wishes to all for a better and happ(ier) 2021. It's the most we can all hope for now.

We enjoyed our traditional crab legs and champagne on NYE and I made chicken tacos the next day with Texas caviar. I enjoyed your photos! My grandkids wore matching pjs that I received a picture of. I took down our Xmas decor and the snowmen are now on the shelves.

love the snowman in the photo with the frog. and all the grands and family are looking so happy and festive and the two grand nieces are growing so fast and cute. i removed all Chrismtas from the nook but left the fall of lights. i tooke the ornments off the tree that was in the nook, added red berries and sat it on the side table. we like to look at the lights. we still have lights but no Standard Christmas..

Great photos. I like the wee green frog and the decorated trees. Your cinnamon rolls have more lavish icing than the ones we buy here!

I would have left up the living room tree longer but the hubby gets antsy to get it down. So we did, and even got things put back into the attic as it's not unbearably cold yet. Saying that, I do have a small tree in my dining room that I put up a little early and leave up longer because it adds such nice light on these dark days. Love the family photos. This year New Years Da was pretty dreary. I made art as the hubby had work t catch up on. I've also started a new Marie Benedict book, The Mystery of Mrs. Christie. It's about when Agatha Christie disappeared. Really liking it. Wishing you and Patrick the happiest of 2021, and hopefully we'll be able to see each other sooner rather than later.

Christmas decor came down quickly here this year. Just wanted to see what new house was like in everyday garb. We have not procrastinated about tending to the to do list from the house inspection. Today tree service stopping by to give us an estimate about removing some overgrown bushes, trees and limbing up the hemlocks bordering our driveway.

I've taken down my 2 wreaths, one of which needs to have some really damaged parts taken off it before storing it in "the holiday decorations" tub. Without anyone coming inside, I didn't bother any decorations, except of course having some blooming house plants...they really cheer me up!

Beatrice, Nice family photos! We took our Christmas decorations down on January 2nd. As for putting them back up, we're pretty traditional and we decorate after Thanksgiving. Stay Safe and Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

All my trees are still up. The big one will come down this weekend and the "Mom" tree. I think the woodland, snowman and "happy" trees will stay up for awhile. I need the light and since only Rick and I are in my house, I don't need to worry too much about public shaming! I'm aiming for March Spring Equinox!

Sue is changing things over and has done most of it, I think.

But I just looked out the window, and the well lit place across the street is still well lit. This makes me happy.

My holiday mood hasn't waned. I still have the colored lights up because I love looking at them - and I still have eggnog and Christmas cookies. The photos of your relatives are sweet. The picture of Autumn Rose with the dolls is priceless. And I like the snowmen! Have a bright and blessed new year.

No snow here although we have had a fluttering of snowflakes a couple of times. Sounds like you had a good time and were able to do some of your traditions, like the cinnamon rolls. My eldest daughter and her family do matching pjs. Opened n a Christmas eve box along with bath supplies, dvd and book.

Christmas this year didn’t seem any different than any other day of the year, with the exception that Bob and I exchanged gifts with each other. We have had traditions in the past few years that keep changing. We have had Bob’s daughter and our granddaughters over for a waffle breakfast...that was a good one. I like your cinnamon rolls tradition and will try to keep that one in mind. We took down and put away our Christmas decorations on New Years Day. I think we need a restart to the new year. It sure hasn’t had the best of starts, given the events at the Capitol yesterday. I pray going forward that 2021 improves.

Changing over to a winter theme will keep the snowmen around till spring. ;)

No, my family never wore matching outfits...never had family Christmas photos even. My two little grandsons have had matching Christmas sweaters in their Christmas photos but I don't know how long that will last. Ian had one and when Liam could wear it and Ian had grown out of it she managed to find another one in a larger size! Does look cute.

Looks like it was a wonderful walk--without critters of any kind. ;)
