Claws and (KFC) Slaw

We've been invited to the home of domino playing friends for a "Lobster Fest" this weekend — our first since relocating to New England. We've enjoyed feasted on lobster mac & cheese, which is a big HUGE menu item in many fast food eateries and restaurants here, but it's really not the same as eating lobster. Trust me on this.

This weekend event is "a bring something" along. I volunteered to make coleslaw because it's a side dish also to the alternate used pork that's being served. Nope, I didn't use pre-packaged slaw, there's no need to since shredding a head of cabbage and carrots is easy-peasy with a food processor (and less costly than the packaged stuff too). We already had the needed ingredients including salt, vinegar, lemon juice, pepper, sugar, onion and luckily some buttermilk.

Since our friends said they enjoyed the coleslaw at KFC, a place we never eat at, I decided to try and duplicate their version. I checked online and found lots of sites showing the KFC Coleslaw Recipe. Apparently, it's quite well liked.

And, to save you some time in looking, here is one found online.

KFC Coleslaw Recipe

  • 1/2 C Hellman's mayonnaise (only brand we use and "the best")
  • 1/3 C granulated sugar
  • 1/4 C milk
  • 1/4 C buttermilk
  • 2-1/2 TBSP lemon juice
  • 1-1/2 TBSP white vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp black pepper
  • 1 head finely chopped cabbage
  • 1-2 finely chopped carrots
  • 2 TBSP minced onion

  1. Chop carrots and cabbage into fine pieces using a food processor — it's easier.
  2. Combine all other ingredients, including onions.
  3. Add dressing to cabbage and carrots and mix well.
  4. Cover and refrigerate min. 2 hours before serving; longer enhances the flavors.
According to Grenville, this slaw passed the taste-test. However, this version was too finely chopped for us. Next time we'll return to our recipe, which chops the cabbage and carrots in thin strands and adds celery seed, but no buttermilk.

How do you like (or not) your coleslaw?

Which reminds me that I haven't had slaw yet this summer.

This is Mother's old-time recipe that she used exceptions Blue Plate I'm not sure how she chopped it but you had no food processor. I think she chopped it by hand and the wooden bowl with a chopper she had to leave onions out because I don't eat them but other than that this is what she did. I like KFC okay but it's not my favorite my favorite book is at Publix Deli. They have two kinds we get the sweet. Have fun at your party

MMMMM...I do love some good slaw and they have some good ones. I love a slaw with a bit of mayo, bit of sugar, and vinegar - the blend is always so good. Your lobster fest sounds good. What time shall we be there? lol Have a great time.

The coleslaw recipe looks good, we will have to give it a try. We have recently discovered a food truck in Virginia Beach that has a great reputation. One of the items is a Lobster Roll. You get your choice one mixed with mayo or the other butter but not overly done. I chose the butter and it was swoon-worthy. Just as well we have to travel to Virginia Beach to get it, and apparently only on the weekends.

My dislike of sea food would have me avoid the lobster, but I'd go for mac and cheese, particularly with multiple cheeses.

It's been awhile since I've had anything from KFC, but I did like their slaw, so it's not a surprise that there are recipes out there to replicate it.

I love Red Lobster's cole slaw. Rarely do I make it at home but I did enjoy you sharing KFC's recipe. I hope you guys have a fun time with your friends.

Your blog made me think about making slaw... and shredding it the "old fashion" way. Did you ever use a "mandolin" type shredder? I used to make sauerkraut and would shred the cabbage (and occasionally my knuckles) with this contraption. You are right about shredding it yourself.. tastes so much crisper and fresher!

We always liked the taste of KFC coleslaw too. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

Since I am the only one in my house who eats cole slaw going to KFC is about the only time I have it. It's the dressing they use on it that makes it so good. It's a good recipe to have though.

Did you make a typo with the buttermilk? A cup of buttermilk seems excessive. I use a similar recipe for "southern" coleslaw. No lemon juice, but some yellow mustard.

I rarely have KFC, but I will admit that their slaw is the best!

YES, NCMountainWoman, you are right because I DID make a typo. Thanks for the catch and letting me know and for sharing your version of coleslaw too. The correct measurement should read 1/4 CUP of buttermilk

I love coleslaw. KFC is ok. There is a place in Gilford that is an old fashion ice cream place that makes the best coleslaw. Your version sounds pretty good. I like a bit of sugar in my slaw. MMMMMMMMMM lobstah is the best... Hugs, LJ
