Friday Funnies

Here's a not-so-funny trip down memory lane for those folks living in the U.S.
Does anyone remember when gas prices were this low?
U.S. gas was commonly priced around 29 cents a gallon during the late 1950s through the early 1960s. During local gas wars in the 1950s and 60s, prices dropped even lower than 29 cents, sometimes below 20 cents. (Gas wars were times of competition in the when local gas stations would severely slash fuel prices to undercut rivals.)
This photo, taken last week at a PA museum, shows that less than $7 purchased 23 gallons of gas at just over 29 cents a gallon. According to the Automobile Association of America (AAA) the current national average price for a gallon of gas is $4.528. Western states like Hawaii and Washington join California at the high end, while Gulf Coast and Midwest states (like Kansas, North Dakota) have somewhat lower prices.

On our recent road trip to visit family and friends, I noticed that gas prices in states we were in varied widely — $4.49 in RI, $4.53 in NJ, and $4.65 in PA. This week, Grenville filled his Jeep SUV at a station here in Nashua, NH, at a cost of $4.35. According to AAA, the local average currently is $4.485. While it seems like he got a bargain, it didn't seem that way when the total topped more than $75 for a fill-up.

Your turn — how are gas prices in your area?

As always,. thanks for your comments on my recent post about onboard experiences on our riverboat cruise. I'll have future posts on some of the cities and sites visited.

Enjoy Your Weekend, Everyone
We're glad to be home & after a week of rain hope for a sunny weekend

Our local Sheetz is $4.72/gallon in Warren PA. Having a refinery in Warren doesn’t mean our oil prices are low. In fact our prices are higher than other places in PA.

While I have never lived in the US, when we lived in a border town in the early 70s, we would drive over for cheap gas. There was a price war, and we could fill up for $5. I don't know what our gas is at. I just fill up, which I don't have to do often. I can tell you that my last fill-up was $75.

Our local gas prices in the greater Sacramento, CA area run $6.08 a gal.
Almost highway robbery. We really can't afford to go anywhere !
I remember when Dave and I were first married 1964 and we would run around town to find the cheapest price for gas. I think the average price was $.24 a gal. My little Nash Rambler ran really well on that gas.

I didn't start driving until the mid-1970s, but for a short while could fill up the tank for $10.00. Now I try to make sure I get gas at Costco, which is cheaper than anywhere else.

Fuel prices here in the UK have risen and of course it has a knock on effect on almost everything we buy!

All the best Jan

Here in Malaysia, our government still subsidises fuel.
The everyday grade we use, called RON95 (similar to regular unleaded in the U.S.), is capped at RM1.99 a litre --about USD $0.42, or roughly $1.60 per gallon.
That makes it among the cheapest in the world, even though there’s now a monthly quota.

The price of petrol/gas has also shot up here in Northern Ireland - by around 20 per cent in a few months. Nice fat profit for the oil companies no doubt.

With my first car (VW Bug), I remember paying 33 cents a gallon. At one point during a gas shortage there was a limit of how much you could get at one time....the limit was $5.00 in my area of Ohio. I couldn't get 5.00 in my tank. Those were the days. Cool old photo's. We last paid 4.75. Who knows how long this will go on or how high it may go with trumps idiotic war. It's affecting so many people. Hubby just said last night he's noticed less traffic on the road and assumes it's because people are being careful with how much they drive. We're lucky, we're less than a mile from our local grocery store and only 2 miles from his office, so....we can manage a good long while one one tank of gas.

I had to buy a new car in November, and I got a Prius. So glad that's what I chose, since it's a hybrid, so the current high gas prices aren't affecting me as much. Blessings!

I saw a sign the other day that priced gas at $4.89.

It’s still cheap compared with Europe.

...I believe that when I learned to drive, gas was 38 cents a gallon!

When I was first driving we would pool our change for gas to get to the beach.

Oh, yes, I do remeber gas prices in the 20 cent range, often even below that. Back in the 1950s that last nine tenths of a cent made sense. Here in Georgia the governor has taken down the state charges. I fueled up this week at $3.999 a gallon.

I kind of remember gas that low. I do remember when you'd pull up and the station people would fill your car for you. And I definitely remember the 1970's embargo and the lines and (at least in Massachusetts) the altering gas days. I wonder why my mother and father (should try be alive and still driving) would have thought of today's prices. Have a super next few summer like days. hugs-Erika

Not only that, I remember when you would get gas, they would run out and clean your windshield!

my hand is UP!! when i first started to drive, we would get 50 cents worth of gas. it was all the money we had and it got us through the night!! i remember when they would check your oil and clean the windshield. i think we are the only state where we do not pump our own gas. a boy recently cleaned the front and back windows of the car and my husband gave him an extra 5 dollars. he said "i really want to pay for your lunch"!! as we pulled away, i told the hubs, 5 dollars is not enough for lunch!!! hehehehe

People seem to be looking more to electric cars. Good report!

Our gas prices shot up to $4.99 a few weeks ago, but the past few days, they went back down to $4.68. We get ripped off in NE Ohio as our prices are always higher than the national average.

Right now we are sitting at about 4.25 per gallon in our area. It seems like just yesterday gas was around 2.50. I suspect the gas and oil companies are gouging us as they always do. No one holds them accountable. Have a great week!

Gas prices here are very high, the last time we filled the car it was around 6 bucks. Since we grew up in Germany, we are used to high gas prices since that has always been the case there, but the cars have been way more fuel efficient than in the US.

I remember when my dad purchased gas when I was very small. The gas station would also give free plastic blow up toys at Christmas. I was given a reindeer. The gas prices here are high as well...........as are the groceries and everything else one would like to purchase.

At 19 yrs old, I would use change from a jar to put a few gallons in my car. Times have changed!

I grew up in Windsor in the 50s, and knew a lot of folk who went to Detroit to fill up on American cheap gasoline. I haven't filled my car lately as I have not been driving, but I suspect that it will cost me what it cost AC. Sigh.

Dear Dorothy
I think recent decade was the one in which prices made highest jumps of the history. War has added one more excuse in many other excuses government use for the inflation. Before the this recent war petrol price for one litre was less then 200 , and now it’s more than 400 rupees Pakistani. Though central government is providing subsidies to the people who have lower income, overall situation is very stressful for the public here
