Where We've Been

It's been awhile (three weeks or so) since my last post right before we left home in Nashua, NH. (Thanks, everyone for the birthday well wishes).

In the interim, we've visited six states (NJ, VA, SC, FL, AL, GA) with a couple more to come before we're back home. Unfortunately, there has been little sightseeing in most places. A couple of states were overnight stays; in others it rained nearly all the time (1-3) days we visited.
Fernandina Beach, FL
Anyone who has traveled knows that bad weather can dampen extended sightseeing. We try to explore as much as possible on road trips and often this requires outdoors time, definitely not enjoyable during downpours. Thankfully, there hasn't been any snow or ice but temps in FL, AL and GA were cooler than anticipated. The morning we left NH, the temperature was in the single digits. Daytime FL temps in the 40s and 50s were like springtime to us, but less so for residents.

The incentive for this road trip (aside from my birthday and Hearts Day) was Grenville's ham radio convention in Orlando, FL, which he called disappointing in that several major product vendors were no-shows. This event had been cancelled in 2021, apparently event attendance is not back to pre-pandemic levels of the 2020 convention he attended there.

We had anticipated the possibility of meeting fellow bloggers in FL and TN on this trip. However, after exchanging emails and phone conversations, we mutually agreed that this was not the best time because of you-know-what. We always enjoy meeting people, but would rather everyone be safe and feel comfortable. And, just maybe, we will have the chance to meet up on a future trip.

Social distancing was recommended in most of our accommodations, which have all been Hampton Inns with the exception of the Orlando convention hotel. The least said about that one the better as it was like an oversized motel that featured outside facing rooms on six levels. Mask wearing was not required in, aside from when using trolleys in Alexandria, VA and Orlando, FL, where masks were required regardless of vaccination status. One hotel required guests to don plastic gloves at the in-house breakfast and had an employee positioned there to ensure compliance. While similar gloves were provided at a couple of other locations, their use was optional and I noticed that most guests opted not to wear them, myself included.

Weather and lack of sightseeing aside, the best thing about the trip was visiting family and friends who we saw three years ago when Grenville attended a convention in Dayton, OH.

Grenville has cousins in FL and AL and a Navy buddy in FL. I have a cousin and former co-worker in GA. We also visited my brother and his wife in NJ where we co-celebrated their January wedding anniversary and my February birthday.
Architecture in downtown Fernandina Beach, FL
After two days of rain, we spent a sunny afternoon in downtown Fernandina Beach which is the northernmost city on Florida's Atlantic coast and located on Amelia Island, known as the Isle of 8 Flags because it has had the flags of that many nations flown over it: France, Spain, Great Britain, Spain (again), the Republic of East Florida, the Republic of the Floridas, Mexico, the Confederate States of America, and the United States.

While the French, English, and Spanish all maintained a presence on Amelia Island at various times during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, the Spanish established Fernandina named in honor of King Ferdinand VII of Spain.
Grenville posed with a couple of "new" but silent friends. The weather was warm and sunny on the last of our 3-day stay. The pirate on the left was standing guard outside the Palace Saloon, Florida's oldest bar; the one on the right was outside a gift store.
Fernandina Beach, FL, sunset
The day ended with a beach walk, and as shown by our outerwear, it was a chilly late afternoon. After leaving FL, our adventures continued, some highlights will be in future posts.

This week we're headed home with a overnight stops for dining and sleeping only. There's a forecast of ❄️ snow by the end of the week and we plan to be home before then.

FYI — blog reading/commenting has been delayed during our travels; hopefully I will get to read your recent posts once we're back home in Nashua.

I’m sure it was memorable and a change from winter, which you will shortly get back to. Safe travels.

That’s a lot of traveling. Plastic gloves is a new part of Hygiene Theatre! Lol, I’ve always just used hand sanitizer, like most normal people, when eating out. Safe travels back home!

Sometimes a little rain must fall...but a bummer to your trip opportunities. Glad you got to enjoy Fernandina Beach...as well as a walk on the beach in cool weather. Hope future visits will be planned so you can see blogger friends.

Happy Birthday! It must be rather confusing having all those different Covid19 measures in place in different places. I am glad you got some good weather some of the time. This time of year can be hit and miss with the weather.

Well, you've certainly been getting around! I'm glad you were able to see some family and friends - but it's a shame that the weather was disagreeable.
The weather seems to be bad nearly everywhere lately - but at least it's slowly starting to warm up.
Spring isn't too far away!

I am sorry that we didn't get to meet on this trip, but hope we will sometime in the future. Yes, the weather here this month has been a bit topsy turvy in the temperature department, but still I know it has been warmer than NH! I am sorry the convention was not quite up to par either. But all in all I hope and pray that when you get home you will be able to say "it was a great trip, but it sure is good to be back home". That's what I usually say after any trip...it's always good to get back home to my own bed and comforts. Thank you for the phone calls along the way. Oh, Fernandina Beach looks more interesting than I knew, and I've lived not all that far away. Might be worth a little day trip sometime. Take care and enjoy the rest of your journey, and most of all be safe!! Blessings to you both.

We're in a blizzard right now up here. Sounds like a good trip regardless of the setbacks. Safe travels home. :)

At least you were able to get away. I drove Nashua today on the way home from visiting my Mom down in MA (I haven't seen her since right before xmas because of omicron) and there was basically no snow there, unlike here at my house where we still have some. So you were able to escape the melt, at least until this next storm rolls in. Your trip sounds good, even if the weather didn't really cooperate and the ham radio convention wasn't all that was hoped for. It must have been nice to see family and to also go some place where the weather was consistently a bit warmer than ours has been. Florida when it is chilly can feel very chill though because of the humidity so I get the sweatshirts. Have a safe trip home, and I hope you have a pleasant drive too. hugs-Erika

You have definitely "been around" -- and it looks wonderful. Right now, even unseasonable Florida weather would be welcome, though we're in a bit of a thaw for a day or two right now. It sounds like a terrific trip and nice to see family, too. It must feel wonderful to be out and around.

You're persistent to get in some sight seeing and visiting under those circumstances.

Wondered where you had been all this time. My travels took me to Buffalo on the 31st and I'm still here though Dan went to VA to tend to a family matter on his side then home to NH. He'll return for me on Sunday.

Though the weather wasn't the best, it must have been nice to travel and meet up with family and friends. Good trip! you were lucky.

I'm sorry about the weather and lost sightseeing, but glad you enjoyed time with friends and family. Grenville's "friends" look handsomely roguish! :-)

G'day Happy Wanderers! You'll be glad to get home, no doubt. No matter how wonderful a trip is...it's always nice to get back home...I think, anyway! :)

Those swimmers at the seaside in Florida must have received a hell of a fright when the helicopter crashed into the sea near to them! They would've broken all Olympic records getting out of the water!

We're receiving bucket loads of rain here at present....it's the final week of our summer...and summer is definitely going out with a very wet bang!

Thanks for taking us along with you on your travels, Beatrice....take good care. :)

This seems to be such an interesting trip. I miss being in Florida every winter. Let's hope we don't get all the snow that is being forecast. Enjoy your day, hugs, Edna B.

Looks like you had an interesting trip despite the poor weather. Asking you to wear plastic gloves at the hotel breakfast is pretty extreme. I've never heard of that happening in the UK. A shame you couldn't meet your fellow bloggers, but as you say it's best to feel safe and comfortable.

Even though the weather didn't always cooperate I'm sure you had a good time. Just getting away and seeing your friends and family must have been really nice. The pictures from Florida are really nice, I like the architecture.

That sounds like a big trip. Shame about the rain but it must have been fun catching up with friends and relatives.

I'm late in commenting. Nevertheless I'm glad you managed to go on a road trip together, the reason being a conference. The hotel experience sounds different.
Although the weather wasn't good for sightseeing I'm sure getting to be with family was one of the highlights having travelled such a distance. Belated birthday wishes and I hope you soon settle when you return home.

Beatrice, I'm a bit surprised that there were so many restrictions encountered throughout your trip. We'd never run into gloves required anywhere...although our traveling this past 2 years has been minimal. Too bad about the weather...but at least you got out and about. Love this week's Friday funny with the 3 outlet's frowning. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

Sorry the weather wasn't perfect for you! Maybe next time. Looks like you found some fun and smiles anyway (I would have expected no less from you!).
