Now We Know . . .

Thanks to all who left comments on the previous post about "Oscar."  It was yet another of my divergent tangents which I hope proved as interesting to some folks as it did to me. But then I have been known (ask Grenville!) to waste spend time doing "research" online.

As noted in that post, we did not plan to watch the 87th Academy Awards show; now this event is "history."

Instead, Grenville watched Downton Abbey, season 5, episode 8, and was crestfallen sad to learn that it was the prequel to next week's the season finale. (Whoops sorry to post that spoiler alert if you're an for ardent fan too.) Since this show is not "my cuppa tea," I read while he watched.

Afterwards, we both watched the 6th and final episode of Grantchester on Masterpiece Mystery. The series is based on stories by James Runcie in Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death, the first volume of the Grantchester Mysteries series. The PBS series only featured episodes based on this first volume. There are two more focusing on the exploits of clergyman-detective Sidney Chambers: Sidney Chambers and the Perils of the Night and Sidney Chambers and the Problem of Evil. A fourth volume is due in May.

Still, I was wanted to know which film(s) and actor(s) were deemed the worthiest among all others. Mostly, I wanted to see the opening production staged by this year's host Neil Patrick Harris, who I watched way back (1989-93) when he starred in Doogie Howser, M.D.. Some critics have commented that his first Oscars hosting gig might have been his last. (Sadly, critics can be very mean-spirited.)

If you are curious too about the winners and losers, you can catch most  of the show highlights and downfalls at ABC The Oscars website for as long as it remains online. And, you will have saved yourself several hours of viewing. Be forewarned, you will have to wait through ads. (Thankfully, they're shorter than those shown during the live telecast.)

I used to watch Doogie Howser and loved it. I did not watch the Oscars, but caught up this morning reading about the winners. I did watch a clip of Lady Gaga's performance and was impressed.

I did watch about half and hour of the show but lost interest after that.

I saw only a short bit of the show while it was on, but I think I caught up with most of the highlights today online.

We watched Downton Abbey, too. The Oscars do not impress me anymore. I feel sorry for anyone asked to host these types of events. They are given lame material and expected to do something great with it.

I did watch the awards show for the first time in years. I felt that Neil Patrick Harris did a good job for the most part but some of his jokes fell a little flat. Since I had not seen most of the movies i was in the dark about which would win. I was surprised that I predicted a lot of the winners. I felt sure that Boyhood would win some because of the time they took to film it. The Imitation Game was about a subject that is relevant today but steeped in history which indicates something they like. The Theory of Everything about Stephen Hawking is a sentimental favorite. Whiplash I had not heard of so I expected little. I was surprised that there were not more awards for Selma, American Sniper, or Foxcatcher. I was beginning to think Birdman was going to win nothing and then they sort of caught fire toward the end. The Grand Budapest Hotel was a surprise all the way around for me. I believe the voters usually go for something a little less zany.

Too bad Grantchester is over. British dramas are good but short (in episodes per year), but perhaps that is why they are so good -- quality over quantity.

I missed the Oscars, I played a few games of cards with a friend. One year I was in Germany and the time zone made me watch after they had actually been on. I was watching military cable, and my cousin stayed away from the newspapers and all so she could enjoy them if I stayed quiet and let her listen.

I saw all i wanted to see on the news, since i knew not one single person that one and had seen none of the movies it was enough. i did enjoy viewing all the dresses on a website that posted them in a slide show. that was fun..

I am right in there with Grenville in being a Downton fan. Love that show. What you reading, girl?

I didn't watch the Oscar's but they did show it here on PBS online.

It must be tough hosting that show after Ellen last year since she was so successful in doing it.

I am a downton fan and they show it here as soon as they are allowed after it is shown in Britain. I also found out that they show Grantchester here too on Saturday evenings but I have missed the first episodes just because I didn't kno it was on.

Have a great day!

Christer.

I watched the Oscars with Greg and enjoyed it for the most part. It does go on too long though. I'm always hoping they will cut out some of the musical numbers, but I guess everyone but me likes them. I've been watching Grantchester and enjoying it a lot. Hope it comes back with more episodes in the future.

I recorded both Downton Abbey and the Oscars and have yet to watch either. I blame it on time constraints. I'm really not much of a movie person. I never go and usually watch only what we get at work. I think I only recorded the Oscars to say I had watched them. I'll probably just delete it without seeing it at all and go for Downton Abbey instead.

I used to watch Doogie Howser but would have to refresh my memory and watch a show or two to see if I enjoyed it or not. We watched the Oscars all the way through because of our son and daughter-in-law coming over. I have to say the company was excellent but I found the show a bit lackluster. To be fair I hadn't seen any of the movies and didn't recognize a lot of the stars. NPH was okay as the host, I have seen worse. His dance routine I thought was impressive.

p.s. I also thought Lady Gaga did a great rendition of all the songs to the Sound of Music, and thought she was very gracious to Julie Andrews when she appeared on stage afterwards, as Julie was to Lady Gaga. I have always been a fan of Julie Andrews.

My children came over, which they do on Sunday evenings and we ended up watching the awards. I was glad I did..and didn't mind anything at all that our little dougie houser did. I didn't see the "in his shorts" display..not sure how we missed it but we did. The only part I didn't really care much for or "get" was the "briefcase" bit. *shrug* :)
