It's THAT Bad

In the aftermath of hurricane Sandy, family and friends in our home state of New Jersey are safe. But like so many other NJ residents they remain without electrical power. Thankfully, a wood burning fireplace and generator are helping ease their discomfort. We are keeping in contact by cell phone.

Roadways leading to NJ have pickup trucks carrying generators and gas cans in the back.

Over  2.5 million customers lost power statewide at the height of the storm; currently over 1.5 million homes remain without power. Utility workers from states around the country are traveling to NJ to help repair downed power lines. We saw this support firsthand yesterday. We are on a road trip that took us on the NJ Turnpike, where we spotted utility trucks with Indiana, Maine and Mississippi license plates. There were also numerous tree-clearing companies on the way to helping out.

We also saw long gas lines at turnpike service areas. Then, experienced the situation ourselves in Parsippany, NJ, at the only station with gas available within a 10-mile radius. Along with other motorists, we waited over 3 hours and were thankful to get a $50 fill-up. Most stations are closed since the pumps will not work without electrical power.

Joining these motorists, were lines of homeowners waiting to fill-up containers to fuel their home generators. My brother told me earlier today that he has waited in similar lines for the past couple of days.

These scenes will be repeated for days; New Jersey's main power companies are estimating that some customers may be without power from 10 days to 2 weeks.

My heart goes out to all the people without power. I also feel for all the workers who are toiling long hours trying to get the lines back up.

It is not a good situation. I would hope that trucks of food and water will get sent in to help out. It would great if they could invent meters on tankers and then they could drive out into neighborhoods and dispense gasoline. Thoughts and prayers are going out for your area.

I have seen pictures of people lining up to get fuel for their cars and pray for those who don't have that freedom. It must have been like hell on earth this past week.

We read articles all the time about how bad it is where sandy flew by. I do hope they can fix the electricity quickly and find new homes for those that lost theirs.

You really tell like it is with your pictures and it points out how dependant we've become on electricity. Many countries don't have that luxury.

Beatrice, I'm sorry to hear that you have friends and family who are still without power. So many are still without power and others are trying to clean up and recover from all the destruction and devastation from the storm. It's hard to imagine it all.

HI there you two! I'm finally getting back to blog reading after my hiatus.... trying to carve out an hour or so each night to catch up with friends online etc.

So glad that you were okay during the hurricane, but I'm sure you're worried about your mother and family in NJ.

I SO enjoyed our meeting last month!

Praying for your family in New Jersey.
Your last few posts of the area is really eye-opening, much more real than the news reports show.
Take care.
Love, KAY
