Duck ! (the answer)

The last 2010 What is This post proved to be an easy challenge as everyone got this one – the feedback comments were great fun too.

YES, the photo was of 2 battling mallard ducks. The combatants were photographed during our November road trip to GA. Both were vying for the attention of a certain female mallard. The shots were taken with a small digital camera, which while not great for capturing action shots, still provided some interesting effects.

Here’s a bit more of the fight . . .duck fight collage And, a more peaceful couple . . .duck couple collage

THANKS to all who had some fun with me!

Nice collages! I think the blurriness works just fine in these photos, and really gives you a feel for the "action". When I was down by the river here a few days ago I saw a Mallard battle too, but they spent a lot of time underwater. My shots were not as good as yours because of the cloudy day.

Elaine, yes I agree that the camera's limited ability to stop action worked to an advantage here. The blurred effects really show a struggle here.

Grammie G, sorry there were no prizes this time...maybe in the spring when Grenville grows a few too many cukes? And didn't you enjoy the challenge too :-)

Thanks Mona, yes they were going at it - what males will do to impress a female - no matter what species!

Very nice images. I'm glad I didn't miss those.
