For the Birds

This week has been busy with time spent baking cookies (sampling too), writing Christmas cards, and wrapping gifts. But, it was relaxing to enjoy a cup of coffee early today and watch birds feeding near our kitchen window. Temperatures were in the mid 20s during the early morning so being outdoors was strictly for the birds.

A female cardinal joined a couple of finches for breakfast.

The blue jays never share well and tend to dominate the feeder.

These goldfinches hung on the thistle sock while a junco sat in the old flat feeder.

This nuthatch serenaded most of the morning – loud enough to be heard in the kitchen.

Hope you also find time for some peaceful moments during this busy time of year.

They are a bit hungry these days, aren't they?
I haven't seen the hawk for a couple of days, so business has picked back uyp out front. I hope he doesn't come down your way.
Nice shots!

Beautiful birds!
I wish I could sit and look at " my" birds in the kitchen too, but the feeders are on the wrong side of the cottage :-) :-)

-2F here this morning so the birds really needed those sunflower seeds in the feeders!

Have a great day now!
Christer.

What wonderful bird photos today Beatrice. I'm so glad you feed them when it's cold.
Just a little note about the comment you left on my blog; it wasn't snow on a flower. It was a cotton boll opening up. The last of the cotton is being harvested this time of the year in FL and south Alabama. It did kind of look like snow on a plant! Hugs!!!

Hi Technogran, the cardinals are my favorite birds as well and so nice that they share the feeder with the finches. I especially like the male cardinal, but haven't seen many yet. Thanks for the visit today. I enjoy your blogs too.

Yes, AC, it is nice to stay indoors where it's warm with a warm cup of coffee.

Yes, Possum, they are hungry and the only threat I've seen lately is a neighbor's cat which has to be shooed out of the yard. Thankfully, no hawk sighting that I've seen.

Steve, the flat feeders need refulling more than the tube feeders but I have been filling them a bit more so there's no need to add more seed every day - too cold! Thanks for the compliment and the visit.

Grammie G, I know what you mean about not having enough time during this holiday season. Yes, our holiday plans are moving along, just wish the season was a bit longer. Thanks for the visit and hope your holidays are wonderful.

Thanks Mona, I do enjoy your bird shots and wish I had a long telephoto on my digital camera. I used to have a digital SLR but got tired of carrying it and assorted lenses. I took your suggestion about adding peanuts to the flat feeders for the visiting blue jays but they seem more interested in the birdseed - maybe because it's less work?

Hey Christer, you might have to move the feeders so you could watch the birds from the kitchen window. It weasn';t quite as cold here, and I have noticed the birds tend to wait until it warms up a bit before going to the feeders.

Hey Mama-But - Whoops I should have realized that it would not be snow in your area, well maybe later this winter? Thanks for letting me know it was cotrten - still like the photo. I feed the birds when it's warm too - year round in fact. They are swuch fun to watch so the entertainment value is worth the cost of the seed.
